"I didn't really think things through during the staff meeting, but I'm ... a little concerned about April."

"I agree, I- ... wait, I'm concerned for like a half dozen different reasons, what specifically do you mean?"

"It's one thing to keep Natalie in those casts, it's a crucial part of her therapy -- and frankly I'm amazed by how well it's working -- but it seems a little inhumane to put someone who probably has some brain damage in semi-permanent restraint. Especially a cast straitjacket."

"I know what you mean; it wasn't an easy decision. Dr. Keyes and I spent a lot of time going through her file and talking with Northview, we just gave a quick summary to everyone during the meeting, but I'll be happy to go through everything in more detail. I'm fine staying a little after clocking out, does that work for you?"

"Yeah, thanks. See you then."

"Wow, all normal."

"Yeah: cognitive function, short and long term memory, motor function, though that isn't a surprise. MRIs all look normal. She just gets extremely angry, pretty frequently, and doesn't even try to hold anything back."

"Hmm, 'no progress with anger management therapy, patient regressed immediately afterward, shows no interest in improvement' ... oh. I didn't realize how often she attacked staff and other patients. Makes sense that they'd put her in a straitjacket."

"And after that, she actually did seem to calm down, and made some progress with anger management."

"Oh, until they took the jacket off."

"Yep. After that first time, they sedated her when they changed her into a clean straitjacket to wash the old one, but it wasn't long before she figured out that she could slip it off when the crotch strap was undone."

"She ... oh, holy crap."

"Knocked out an aide with a headbutt once they undid the crotch strap so she could use the bathroom, slipped the jacket off over her head, stole the aide's uniform, put the aide in the straitjacket and wound some of the belts around the plumbing to keep her in place and give her more time, then was almost buzzed through the outer door when the security guard wasn't paying close attention. "Escorted by two aides to the bathroom after that, knocked one out immediately, fought with the other ... how did she break both of the aide's arms when she was still in a straitjacket!?"

"I have no idea. When she attacked three aides at a time, Northview gave up and decided to dump her on us."

"... so undoing that one strap is a trigger for her."

"A very consistent one. It's like, once that strap is undone, she knows she can slip out, and she snaps. So we're hoping it'll work to eliminate that trigger and allow her to make some real progress."

"No, but that's okay, you'll get used to-"

"I don't know how you can stand being stuck like this, 24 hours a day, I can't ..." 😟

"I know this is going to sound weird, but this is the first time in my life that I've felt safe."

"You're right, that sounds completely insane."

"I guess being stuck like this is what it took for me to realize it's okay to be vulnerable, that it isn't weakness to accept help. I finally started to put in the work to get better, to deal with stuff in a healthier way ... it's been hard, but it's absolutely worth it."
