Straight edge can be your own interpretation of the values.
Some people who are edge just don't do drugs, drink alcohol etc. but have different sex values.
Notice how this song, that coined the term "Straight Edge" does not relate to sex or anything. Just drugs.
It does not have any religious values or anything of that sort. (Vegan, vegetarian, etc.)
I for one, am straight edge. I don't do drugs, or drink alcohol, but I'm open to promiscuous sex, I'm atheist and not a vegan.
Like I said, it's how YOU interpret the values of straight edge, much like how everyone has a different interpretation of the bible when they read it.

This is great. xD I'm a n00b, yes, new to straight edge, new to life, really. I downloaded (shoot me) Straight Edge by Minor Threat. Kinda... I dunno. I like my melodic punk.
Straight Edge sounds awesome, I've been researching it for a few monthes. I don't listen to any straight edge bands (quite the opposite) but... I don't know.
Also... An added bonus, my parents are smokers and love alcohol. Great way to piss them off. And they can't really do anything, because how I'm choosing to live my life is pure and clean.

Despite the fact i completely disagree with the above philosophy, and fully advocate the use of drugs, sex and anything else that i cannot think of a logical reason for depriving oneself for, there is definately an elegant simplicity in minimilistic iconiniscm present here. Personally though i think youre chosen lyrics are crude and juvenile

i just never heard of them. im musicaly shelterd... a friend of mine told me that stright edge means someone who doenst drink,smoke do drugs have sex with everything and i have a deep rooted hatred for all the above. thus i agree with all the straight egde phlosophys and such. i dident know band loyalty was needed to be poision free. but thanks for the heads up.

If you heard Minor threat on the radio I would want to listen to that station. Truth be told, they arent played on the radio. If you wanted to learn your "roots" then go buy a CD.
But one of the real questions i hear over and over again is "do you have to be into hardcore to be straight edge"?
Of course not just like you said its about being poison free.
But I hope you also get that its about your self, and you shouldn’t just "hate" all those things. You should be committed and willing to be poison free, and committed to making straight edge a positive non-violent movement.
