I met Alex last summer when Testament opened for Judas Priest. He is a super nice guy, and first rate guitarist.

First of all, the B&W conversion was a nice touch. The shot looks a bit too noisy to be displayed in colour (at least for my taste), but it suits B&W just fine. Also, I don't think colours would've added anything to the shot.

Compositionally, I would've tried to change one thing: I would have kept the rule of thirds in mind and placed the subject a bit more to the left (that would avoid "cutting" the headstock of the guitar as well). There is too much "dead space" on the left side. I wonder if there were some distracting items on the right side that kept you from "pushing" the composition to the left.

The lighting is good. There are some blown out highlights in his face and hair, but they don't bother at all. The light source in the upper right corner is what makes this shot so appealing to me.

Overall, I like it, and I would probably hang it on my wall if I were a fan of the band!

There was a little bit of fog, and I think the light is refracting off of that.. a tad bit over-exposed, too, i think..

AH! I am so happy to see this picture! Alex deserves some lovin'.

He's also in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which is how I first met/saw him. Kick ass guitarist and just an all-around amazing guy. If he gets out around my area, I'm going and seeing him.

Really? I honestly didn't know about his other bands until I saw him at TSO, and then through another band he toured with for a bit, called ZO2 out of New York. He's so fun to watch on stage.

He has a jazz band too, called 'the Alex Skolnick Trio'

Yep, that's who ZO2 toured with. I would have loved to see it.

Nice picture. You got exactly the right moment where he looks nice and dreamy up above. I like how the lights in the upper right corner and beams all over the rest and still doesnt turn Alex into a silhouet. I guess there was a light from the front as well? Nice and sharp, can ben quite a pain in such concert situations eh.

Btw, good example that the 3/d composition rules aren't nessecary for an interesting composition!

I have been doing some concertphotography as well and I really like it. The artists do not look posed when they perform.

I envy you for that lens, want it as well! I got a 50mm 1.7 which works really well too, but since you cannot walk forward or backwards a lot in concertsituations you don't control the composition really well...

I'll look at more of your pictures!

Cheers,

Daan

like he knows the riffs like the back of his hand

Its worth it to find a 35/2, 28/2.8, or similar, if you can.. what body do you use?
