I seriously love this ship but I don't really get how it started in the first place. I mean, I don't see much evidence in the game that Papyrus NOR Mettaton likes each other. ( For ex. Near the end of the pacifist run, you can prove that Toriel and Sans like each other because they text to each other, likes puns, and more. )

Basically it comes from a a lot of circumstantial evidence, if you call Papyrus in Hotland at one point he'll tell you he thinks of Metta as his "favorite sexy robot". And if you look at the figures on Pap's desk a second time it'll tell you they're all figures of sexy robots. Also his favorite show is one of Mettaton's, and it generally gives the impression Papyrus has a crush on him. Also this: [link] But these are very easy to miss and I don't blame you for being confused.
As for Metta's side of things there's not much, but who wouldn't like Papyrus? c;
