Description
This piece was done in 2002 after I'd found new sort of respect for the character of Mr. Freeze as seen in the 'Batman: The Animated Series' cartoon. He is a deeply tragic character I always felt was underused.For this drawing, I decided to mess around in a Bruce Timm style and use some of my Prismacolor markers to practice with light and shadow.

Mr Freeze to me is like the Beast from the fairy tale Beauty And The Beast. He is deformed and very imposing physically, and any naive person would think he is a monster, but secretly he is filled with warmth, love and sadness over his wife whom he cares for deeply.
I think that's what most people fantasise about finding. A person who has a very tough exterior but a very soft underbelly. It definitely makes for a brilliant villain.

Nice effect. And yeah, I can see why Victor would have a tear going down his eye because of what had happened to someone he loved more then anything.
I just wish they give him a break. Seriously, for all the crap he goes through, I think he at least deserves to have his wife healthy and with him again. I mean...I like Mr. Freeze as a bad guy, but wouldn't it be interesting to see him as a good guy?

He's considered an Anti-villain, or usually a villain who has heroic motives (in this case VENGEANCE! for Boyle nearly killing his wife because he got a few mil over budget without his consent (and when he could recoup the losses within a fortnight with a FULLY FUNCTIONAL CRYOGENIC SUSPENSION UNIT!) AFTER he cut funding).
Mr. Freeze needed a break, a big one.

Vitcor Fries was my favourite villain for the same reasons. While being a worthy adversary of Batman, he was also the one that I felt Batman could also empathize with the most because all of Fries' motives were based on love though a different kind. I agree he was very underused though those few times he was used, I was always pleased with what I saw. Especially the movie Subzero. Other than the Joker, he deserves his part in Batman Beyond well though it broke my heart with how even when it seemed he would finally get a second chance, he still suffered and even his death was horrible if he died.

Great contrast with the tear cutting through the shadow. The presence of Mrs. Freeze really emphasizes the tragedy of the character. Excellent job.

I aggree with you. I'm still mad at the Batman movies for making his character so cliche. I would love to see Patrick Stewart play him someday.

I find this is a very powerful piece, the shading is incredible. I love that tear trail effect, because it creates a kind of impact along with the round light of the eyes. I totally adore this!
