Description So, Legend of the Five Rings....not sure if I've mentioned it yet, comes from a fine bunch of lads making a fine game. Go look it up, and enjoy.

If you've heard of it, then some of what I say next will make sense.

I've recently done a turn-around on my opinion of the Spider Sohei (they are reminding me a LOT of those rascally Sengoku-period fellows I love so much) and decided, come 4th Edition of the RPG, I would play one. So, I designed him in preparation (strange how artists tend to do that, eh?).

I'm rather fond of the komuso monks with the wacky basket hats, from their appearance, ideals, and curious habit of spying and being ronin/ninja in disguise. SO I decided any sohei I played would be one, canon be darned. So here we are.

Way too much text for way too little info.

Feels weird commenting on my own piece. Huh.

Anyway, there was a Spider like this in the fiction recently! Yay! Mind you, it's hardly an original idea on my part and not much of a jump in logic, but screw it! I'm smugly standing in the background, acting like it was all my idea.

Yeah. The Sohei were an interesting bunch. Ronin and ninja would disguise themselves as them for good cover from time to time. As well as the mountain monks, the Yamabushi. Benkei, Yoshitsune's famous Sohei ally once disgised himself as a Yamabushi in a reversal of themes.

Never can tell who's behind that mask. Tenkai Nankobo, a famous monk is belived by some to have been in truth, "Mitsuhide Akechi." Who was presumed dead. The guy lived to be 110, so, seems kinda likely.

Anyhow, great drawing. ^_^ The Sohei were a fascinating bunch! The character work is great. And I like the shading a lot. Good job on the armour, you got the leather texture down really good!

Good choice on the character, and especially on the hat.
