House of El Crest – Early History

The House of El family crest is one of the oldest glyphs in Old-Kryptonese. This symbol is an ancient allegory for man’s ability to defeat and imprison evil. An impenetrable diamond encloses the serpent, a creature almost universally synonymous with the dark side of man’s nature.

Over the millennia, modern Kryptonese evolved into the script that exists today. The El family crest eventually became the modern glyph \8/. Most notably, the serpent was replaced with the mathematical infinity loop. Most scholars ascribe this change to advancements in handwriting, typesetting, and the increasing role of science in Kryptonian culture. A small number of these scholars view the change in a more romantic light, believing it is the final evolution of the original symbol’s meaning: the infinite or “never-ending” battle against evil.

Although the symbol itself became a part of the modern Kryptonese language, the House of El continues to use the traditional version of the glyph to this day.

House of El Crest – The Phantom Zone

Last El family patriarch and scientist Jor-el, discovered The Phantom Zone while searching for a way to communicate with the inhabitants of alternate realities.

Although it is believed his goal was never fully realized, his discovery of the Zone as the “space between realities” was a major breakthrough. Ironically, he found the ultimate method for imprisoning Krypton’s vilest criminals. Because of this, the El family crest became a symbol synonymous with truth and justice, nearly replacing Rao itself as the popular representation of advanced Kryptonian civilization.
