Description
The Pathfinder Infantry Mobility Vehicle is an Alliance designed and built wheeled armoured vehicle produced by many manufacturers Fringe-wide to a universal set of specifiactions. The Pathfinder is designed for operations in any environment, and is capable of carrying 12 personnel and their equipment, fuel and supplies for 14 days.
Primarily designed as a military vehicle, the Pathfinder IMV-0021 has found uses in all Alliance branches as well as being a very useful (albiet expensive) addition to many governmental and civialian operations through out the Warrenni Fringe. The first models (designated IMV-0021X) entered service with AP Unity in AC5744 where they were used as troop carriers for peace-keeping forces on Dalriada as well as field ambulances and refugee transports. The design was refined with 190 minor improvements being made to the first production run of 1500 IMV-0021A units, most of which were by the request of crews and service personnel.
The vehicle is armoured, though armour protection varies depending on the scope of action the unit is intended to see, but all units are proof against rounds of up to and including 12.7mm Ball, AP and HESH as well as Ion-Pulse and Laser weapons of up to 5MW strength. The vehicle is also NBC (Nuclear, Bacterial and Chemical) defended through the advanced composits inherent in its construction and is fully airmobile when deployed on special Alliance "Drop-sleds" as well as being amphibious to a fording depth of 15m, propelled by two water-jets concealed in the rear fenders.
All types contain track units under the main superstructure to aid in the crossing of difficult terrain and are powered by a low-yield Gravity-Drive engine system which allows a top ground speed of 145 kph on flat road surface. In an emergency the vehicle, like all Alliance military-grade vehicles, can use this drive system to engage an active energy-shield, protecting the vehicle and its occupants from heavy weapons fire, though this severly reduces its mobility.
Armament varies depending on the branch that uses it. Governmental, Medical and Civilian models are simply designated IMV-0021 and are unarmed. AP Horizon and AP Unity models are either unarmed, or (as pictured here) are IMV-0021MA versions, armed with a 15mm SV Mk190 ARS battlerifle with integral telescopic and IR sighting unit as well as smoke dischargers contained in the fore fenders. AP Legion uses the most varied types of this vehicle, with over 20 different variants in service including Command and Control, Combat Engineer, Mortar Carrier, Direct Fire, and Field Ambulance versions. The most common of these is the IMV-0021ML Infantry Support and Transport variant as shown here. This type is armed with an AR2V5 45MW Anti-Armour rifle, capable of a sustained energy beam or a rapid burst of Ion-Pulse "packets" so that it may be deployed as a squad support weapon. The ML variant also has stowage space reserved for light field fortifications such as Tanglewire and EMP pulse mines, as well as an EMP mine discharger located under its rear fender. Under Alliance law, no Pathfinder is permitted to be equipped with high-explosive mines however.
The Pathfinder is a useful and popular vehicle with its crews and is a ubiquitous sight in any Alliance operations whether they be Aid, Disaster Relief, Peace keeping, Exploration or Military operations. It is estimated that as of AC01/01/5757 there were approximately 2500 of these efficient vehicles in service, with hundreds more being produced each year.
