I've come up with a new story over the past week! It's called Object Permanence and here's a bit about what it's about:

The basic story concerns the Philosopher’s Stone, a supernatural and sentient object that has been in stasis for a long time, but awakens to find the earth a total gross corrupt mess. Being the Philosopher’s Stone, it wishes to do what it does best and transform the base (in this case, modern society) into the ideal - remake the world to fit what PS thinks the world should be like, based on all the incredible philosophic knowledge it has. But the PS is stationary and can’t move on its own. To propagate its cause, it “curses” various objects not with demons or ill will but with ideals - the ideals that the PS represents and wishes to imprint on the earth. These cursed objects find humans who align with their ideals and bind to them. PS wants to control these humans like puppets; some of them are willing, some are taken down, and others fight back.

The "cursed" objects grant their bound humans with two sets of powers. The first: powers related to what the object literally is, and second, and later: powers related to the objects symbolic ideal.

Here are two of the characters I first made up. On top, we have Consuela, a 22-year old college grad who's trying her hardest to find a job. She picks up a penny on her way to an interview and it binds to her. She gains the power to control coins, generate $100 in any coinage (later she'll be able to do more) and track people by slipping coins in their pockets. The Penny's ideal is Luck, and she'll get cool luck powers later. Consuela is a fighter and resists Philosopher's Stones mind control; then she really has to become a fighter when PS sends its homunculii goons after her.

The bottom character is Earnest, a 14-year old boy with horrible social anxiety. He's a recluse and hasn't been going to school, and wraps himself in the cursed blanket that becomes his object. He can disappear into the blanket, trap people in it, and make people drowsy. His ideal is Rest/Relaxation and he'll gain the power to put people to sleep, and perhaps to control their dreams. Unlike Consuela, Earnest is happy giving up control to PS so the stone will make all his decisions for him and he doesn't actually have to interact with people. What a cute and evil little boy...
