I never let you know how much I like this piece! Anyhow, I thought you'd like to know that I used it in my adult ESL class last night. It was a sensation!
I had the students read it to themselves and told them there was no right or wrong way to read it. I told them they could jump around and follow it however they wanted. Then I had them make three lists. They made one list of words they didn't know (and then asked me the meaning or looked in the dictionary). They made one list of things they thought defined them. And they made one list of things they thought did not define them. Even the guys in the class were able to find lots of things that defined them and in the end we had great conversation about it. The students had lots of questions and they learned a ton. They also loved it.

No, seriously, thank you. It was a great class. Aside from being a super English lesson, it was really good for the students on a somewhat personal lesson. My students come from a pretty conservative and reserved culture. I think a lot of the things you say in the piece convey similar feelings to what many of my students have, however, they've never been able to vocalize it nor have they heard it vocalized because you generally don't communicate those things in their country (especially not in school). Not to mention that their country is even more male dominated than this country. I think it was empowering for them to hear a lot of that stuff said out loud. They really seemed to enjoy it.
Also, the level of "obscenity" was perfect for an adult class. I mean, quite honestly, that stuff is very important to ESL students because they hear it but sometimes they don't understand it (especially when it's combined with slang). Cussing in English is very complicated and illogical. Christ, there was a whole book written on the word "fuck" because it has so many idiosyncrasies and uses. Though, as a teacher I never want to focus on that stuff too much, it was there for those who wanted it. And believe me they DID want it. So again, THANK YOU!
