Old, old sketch I finally decided to finish because I liked it a lot.I like simple mechanical things, so the idea is that there's a pivoting bar set in the seat the pony is attached to. The pivot for that bar is tilted back so that it swings up-forwards and down-back. The pivot is also set forward under the seat, so both legs can't be down at the same time, which means that it will push one leg into a high step when the other is down. And then it's all part of rotating arm so the pony just prances in a big circle.

I really enjoy the idea of having it mounted on a rotating arm to force walking in a big circle. The only thing I'd add is a crank-spring and lever as a pivot point under the bum instead of a firm rod, just in case you didn't step quick enough and you wound up stuck in between steps with both hooves off the ground. But very similarly, lowering one leg could turn a crank that loads a spring that forces the other leg up as soon as the leg that was just raised becomes straight and has weight on it. Yeah, I like that.
