I'm pretty sure they sting, but it's only painful as a bee maybe. The experience when I seen them was pretty cool, I was on a seawall and I just seen a couple tiny ones maybe golf ball sized and then looking deeper into the water I seen all the big ones, it was a whole school of them. Really like your common jellyfish, translucent with four whitish rings on the inside.
