It was Pinkie's birthday and AJ had made a special breakfast for her girlfriend. Pinkie entered the room yawning. Her eyes sparkled as she noticed AJ. "Hey Applejack what are you doing here?" AJ smiled warmly. "Just making a special donut breakfast for my little lady." She showed Pinkie the plate of donuts covered in pink frosting. Pinkie grinned. "My favourite! Thank you Applejack." she said licking her on the cheek. AJ quickly tackled Pinkie in a cuddle. "Happy birthday, beautiful."

Very adorable and sweet. Sweet as Applepie *anyone see what I just did there? Eh? Eh? No? Alright.*
I think the shading is fine though, even if it is lazy as you claim. I suppose Applejack's shadows could be darker, but Pinkie's is just fine. Not too dark to distract, not too light to be missed.
