Yeah, a couple of these guys were lying on a small patch of very green grass, so they didn't really have anything to complain about (well, except their hair getting blown in their face the whole day perhaps...)

I can imagine the conversation. If only this wind would stop it would be a perfect day. The other replies speak for yourself. If the wind stopped we'd be covered in flies.

Cows have horns? I thought that was just bulls? Ah well, I learn something new everyday - I was useless at Biology anyway!

It depends on the race apparently (looked it up), but cows can have horns too. And since this one didn't have any dangling bits between the hind legs, I figured it must be a "she"

Yups, I asked my MUA to come along to Scotland and give this cow a make-over specifically for this shoot. On the day of the shooting, the cow almost stood me up due to a double booking, but luckily, her agent called to inform her that her other appointment had canceled. So everything worked out just fine in the end

Oh, God! I already gave a laugh on account of your story! A photo very creative and undoubtedly a very well-told story! I'm happy to know that in the end, you had luck! LOL!

The cow looks a bit bored btw. What exactly did you do behind that camera?

They have plush toys of those cows in Scotland, but I didn't buy one (too expensive)...

When I took this shot, I was pretty much still trying to catch my breath after the cycling trip we did that day. Up, down, up, down... very exhausting; I was surprised that I didn't shake the camera when I shot this

i adore scottish highlands. they always look so nonchalant.
more towards the picture though, i love the way the orange cow stands out from the vivid green grass. i'm not into photography, so i'm not sure if you used contrasts or whatever, but it's very nice.

This is pretty much how I shot it and pulled it from my camera, I didn't do very much adjustments (I only sharpened it a bit). So thanks, glad you like it

I always used to love seeing those as a little girl.
My mother side has Scottish in them, so they have a lot of pictures.
I do wonder, would they let you pet them?
It be hard not to with how much fluff they do have.

sturm In reply to xQueen-Sinesthesia [2010-09-22 15:55:02 +0000 UTC]

We didn't try petting them, but from how I experienced them, they're totally non-violent so if you don't scare them or anything, I'm pretty sure you could pet them. They can, however, turn up on the middle of the road when you're driving through the hills and mountains, since Scottish fences aren't always that sturdy, so a couple of them escape every now and then...

xQueen-Sinesthesia In reply to sturm [2010-09-23 23:46:01 +0000 UTC]

I do hope they don't become roadkill.
I can't bare seeing that sort of thing.
It's horrid.

sturm In reply to xQueen-Sinesthesia [2010-09-24 11:35:58 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, they're pretty sturdy, so I guess they'll do more damage to a car than the other way around. Besides, the Scottish roads aren't very suited for driving fast, so you see them quick enough to be able to maneuver around them (or wait until they step aside)

xQueen-Sinesthesia In reply to sturm [2010-09-26 01:44:11 +0000 UTC]

Lovely! It'd be absolutely ghastly if something bad
were to happen to those darling creatures.
I do wonder though, do they use them for anything?
Like fur and such?

sturm In reply to xQueen-Sinesthesia [2010-09-26 19:39:45 +0000 UTC]

From what I found on Wikipedia, they're categorized into "beef cattle", which means that they're bred for meat production and leather... not the prettiest story, I'm afraid

It's good at least that they aren't being used enough to make
them extinct though. ^.^
