Description If I ever try to draw another octopus I've given my wife permission to shoot me! Wow it takes along time to draw all those little suction cups! The Blue Ringed Octopus is about the size of a golfball, it has a venom potent enough to kill up to 26 humans, its diet consists of small crabs and shrimp, go figure.

EDIT: I went back in and whipped out a quick underwater background and pumped up the chroma of the Blue Rings, they actually glow like neon when the Octopus is about to attack.

wow. you drew this?! that is a fantastic...that is a perfect example of a blue ring octopus. i love the lighting in the background as well. it makes your subject stand out beautifully

Thanks. What fascintaes me is I drew it slightly larger than real life. Usually I'm drawing dangerous animals at a small scale. Seeing this thing at the size it really exists and knowing how dealy it is leaves me in awe.

It won't be out until Feb of next year, so you have some time to save up the loose change from under the couch cushions. Your drawings are coming along, I like them better now without the blueline showing, glad that worked for you.

This is for BEASTS!: How to Draw Fantastic Predatory Animals. I actually saw one of these at a pet store recently-they kill with one bite, and any kid with $30 can pick one up.

This one place, Aquacon ([link] ) used to sell blue-rings.
Unfortunately, they stopped selling them now.

stvnhthr In reply to avancna [2006-05-27 17:14:34 +0000 UTC]

Well they are highly poisonous and they only have a lifespan of about 6 months so I'm kind of glad they are not sold more. Some animals make better zoo exhibits than pets. Still if the price is right I don't know if I could resist having a pet that glows like a neon vegas sign.

If you have 800 bucks to burn, you could get a mimic octopus.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

stvnhthr In reply to avancna [2006-05-30 16:49:08 +0000 UTC]

Mimics are so cool! But unfortunately they make lousy pets. Mimics don't do well in captivity. Unless you have an aquarium about the size of an RV you won't get to see any of their mimic activity. Plus they stress out and die when taken out of their natural habitat.

avancna In reply to stvnhthr [2006-05-30 16:52:27 +0000 UTC]

Really?
Then whoever bought that one in the local fish store for $700 was being robbed, ne?

stvnhthr In reply to avancna [2006-05-30 17:27:29 +0000 UTC]

That is actually really cheap if they got a true mimic octopus, but it is sad because there are so few in the wild they should not be in the pet trade.

Maybe there are lots of them, and people can't tell which fish is the genuine and which is the molluscan Mel Blanc?
