Description An image from a powerpoint I'm making, depicting what the relations of some animals commonly called "dinosaurs" actually are compared to actual dinosaurs. Red are the non-archosaurs, yellow are non-dinosaurian archosaurs, and green are the dinosaurs.

That rauisuchian looks wonky, I know.

i feel like dimetrodon shoud be a different colour than the marine reptiles, because at least the marine reptiles are at least true reptiles ratehr than mammal relatives

I almost feel as if dimetrodon should be another color (perhaps blue) considering it is the only reptile that was more on the evolutionary side towards mammals, which is interesting in its own right. But it would be for the most part irrelevant to the main point.

in the thumbnail i thought that rauisuchian was like some iguanodontid or close affiliates (due to its tall looking trunk region), but just as fast as that thought clicked me, i immediately saw it was colored yellow, so je-yup!)

It isn't that hard to stomach, when you really get down to it, there's nothing dinosaurian about Dimetrodon, the necessary omissions you have to make to call it a dinosaur are enough to call dinosaur any random lizard or salamander, and maybe even a mouse could fit the bill.

The Pteranodon stands there, contempt with it's placement as a Sisterclade to the Dinosaurs.

The walking with monsters BBC program had to stress that they were not in the time of the dinosaurs when they went to the part about the early Permian. It is sad that a documentary has to do that.

ProcyonNoumer In reply to Avisrex [2014-12-02 05:50:43 +0000 UTC]

for me, you have no idea how sad that is to me! yeesh even i knew that as early as alongside another fact that cats are not 4 legged owls!

randomdinos [2013-05-15 12:07:35 +0000 UTC]

Thinking plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, pliosaurs and permian reptiles are dinosaurs is very common. However I've heard of much worse cases, some people think all prehistoric creatures are dinosaurs. In Primeval, in some episodes, creatures like Hyaenodon are called dinos.

You never watched the show, it seems.

They always say they're dealing with dinosaurs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

acepredator In reply to randomdinos [2014-08-28 14:10:15 +0000 UTC]

They said that because that is the best known example of extinct animals. They make it quite clear that they are dealing with other things.

randomdinos In reply to acepredator [2014-08-28 22:15:06 +0000 UTC]

And why say both? It's contradictory to call something a dinosaur and then say it's not. I still assume they don't really know what they're talking about.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

acepredator In reply to randomdinos [2014-08-29 01:32:08 +0000 UTC]

That may be contradictory but they always identified the creatures as whatever they were.

randomdinos In reply to acepredator [2014-08-29 02:29:36 +0000 UTC]

I haven't watched the show since season 5, but I don't think they noted that the Pteranodon, Mosasaur, Hyaenodon, Anurognathus, Titanoboa, Diictodon, Scutosaurus and Gorgonopsid, among a few others, weren't dinosaurs.

Awww, I remember when I did something like this in my high-school biology class, good times . I had to rely on the first part of WWD, then fill in the blanks by simply talking abut it. I liked it so much I did it again, even though I didn't have biology after my 2nd year, that year I focused on feather evolution.

So I support your powerpoint .

Good diagram. If you wanted to, you could've made Dimetrodon another colour to signify it being a non sauropsid.

Orionide5 [2013-02-10 04:48:26 +0000 UTC]

A useful image. It's funny how all the other creatures look so upset at being excluded. But maybe you should add some other kinds of dinosaurs too, to make it easier to understand (sauropods/ornithischians).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StygimolochSpinifer In reply to Orionide5 [2013-02-10 04:55:15 +0000 UTC]

I left out the other groups of dinosaurs just to keep it relatively simple, just like how I kept out pretty much anything that could be called a dinosaur. Plus I'm going to be talking about image while it's presented.
