Nothing ever seemed to go right for her, Zoe thought sadly as she wandered the woods. She had spent weeks in the human world already, and nothing had held a connection for her. She felt just as out of place here as she did back in Griffia. A tear rolled down her cheek, and she wiped it away angrily. She was tired of crying all the time. Sometimes, it seemed as though that was all she ever did.

She began to run. She'd found that running tended to calm her; to make her forget her troubles, if only for a few moments. She enjoyed the rush of air on her face and the feeling of blood pumping through her veins as her boots hit the ground in sure, solid beats.

As she came to a clearing, she tripped over a fallen log and collapsed in the grass, breathing hard and sweating. The air was humid, and night had fallen as she ran. Breathing hard, she gazed at the stars, and found herself feeling envious of them. They knew where they belonged. They were free.

As she watched them, a few of the stars began to...move. What? Stars don't move. She sat up and stared as they seemed to descend around her. Only then did she realize they weren't stars. Fireflies!

She rose slowly as they gently buzzed near to her, flitting in patterns known only to them. She watched them in wonder, and felt something inside her stir - a kinship she had never felt before. Tears streamed from her eyes again, but this time they were tears of joy.
