Description This is my ink drawing of a Hiberno Norse, or Irish Viking house, refered to in Archeology circles as Type 1, it is commonly found throughout the viking settlements in Ireland, ie Limerick, Wexford, Waterford and Dublin. In Dublin it made up for the majority of excavated houses.

They were made of rectangular shape with rounded corners, had wattle and post walls (no daub they believe they could have used cow dung for insulation, smells good eh?), thatch roofs with a turf underlayer, the roof oversailed the eaves, they had entrances on both ends of the house, and a smoke hole that was used for ventilation as there was no windows.

This one was mostly made from following descriptions in archeology books, with Rotring Rapidograph pen, some dip pen nibs, and some Copic multiliners.

Nice work Jon. We have one of these huts at Upton House near me, where they teach the kids how people used to live. You've got it spot on.

Cool, thanks man, I actually do living history myself as well, love these kind of things, not heard of one in Upton House, do you know the name of the park or historical site that its on? Always interested in collecting good reference or atleast putting markers on the map to things ill see one day.

The place is called Upton House in Dorset. It's a large estate made public with giant bloody peacocks flapping around everywhere. They have this small section, only about 40m in size where the kids can come see what's going on in the hut.
T'is very interesting, you must edumacate me!

Ah dorset! When I looked at it first there was one in Oxfordshire, who would have thought that Upton house would be so popular a name? House looks nice though, cant seem to find any mention of the hut but its probably just a small thing as u say. I always have admiration for these fellas that can build those old houses using the tools of the time, if I had skills like that I am sure my houses would be much better!

Upton was obviously a band from many a year ago that traveled the country spreading their word to estates who took their name with religious zeal.. or summink.

Ahh shame there's no pic. If the weather's good at the weekend I'll see if the wife will take us up there and I'll take a few photees for ya.... so, you know it's gonna rain right?

Yep I admire 'em too, practical people.. I'm useless at practical stuff

lol aye anytime I want to see something it rains, if I decide against it stops, then if I try to be smart and pretend that I dont want to go, it stops and when I leave all happy with myself, it starts again, or then again perhaps my ego is making me hallucinate as I believe myself so important to have a cat and mouse game with the gods.

Not to worry on the pics, there is no rush on that kind of melarky, I wouldnt want you to go out of your way getting them, if your already heading out that way or something and you can be bothered to take pics then sure! Thanks for the offer, very kind of you.

I think the gods are probably just bored, I know I would be sitting on clouds all day.

Grand on the photos, thanks very much for the offer, always good to get good reference from historical things made by people who actually know what their doing, unlike me, but hey the world needs chancers too so here I am
