it's a story of frustration and gloom. i spent about 3 months sketching this in snatches and bits, in the midst of an incredibly busy work season (the bane of being a freelance creative person: you have months of idleness, and then there's a flood of jobs that NEED TO BE FINISHED YESTERDAY!). add to this a 'need-to-be-in-the-right-mood' artistic temperament, and you begin to understand how this went so wrong.i'd finished her face (oh, those exquisite eyes, that nose, those lips...sigh...) and the top of her head. when i sat down to finish the lower curls, i'd lost the original image from my brain (i'd wanted to draw her hair differently from the reference pic), and tried to salvage it the best i could. the disaster you see here is the result. i didn't want to post this, but i'd promised her i would, so here it is. please don't judge her by this. in real life, her hair is as immaculately beautiful as her face.

I don't think anybody looking at this will think it's a "disaster" by any stretch of the imagination! As artists we often get too close to our work and see "mistakes" which no-one else will pick up on, especially when we're pushed for time. To me, this is an impressive and striking portrait, end of story!

This ultimately proves my theory, Subhankar. The phenomenon is so reproducible. One has such a bias against one's own drawings. This is not a disaster. It could have had a bit more likeness, but it's still good

Not only are your comments adorably sweet (my eyes? my nose? my lips? WHAT!? So sweet.) but the time you put into this is as well, and totally shows. And, I in fact, love the hair. I look like a 50's pinup trying to guess what someone in 2011 would have for a hairdo, which is totally a good thing. TOTALLY. I'm seriously in shock.
