Oooops - it's apparently NOT a bee!

Great shot...but is a Syrphidae, Genus Eristalinus of some sort....AKA Hover Fly, Flower Fly and/or Bee fly. It is a bee mimic.

To be honest, I've watched a lot of (honey) bees and they carry pollen sacs on their hind legs and their eyes are quite different to this one - so yes, I should have paid more attention to finding out what it is before shooting off my mouth!

My mum is allergic to these little guys, but I find them fascinating. With spring in full bloom now, we are seeing a great many. Nicely captured

You know, that is a good question 
I DO remember the last time she was stung however
The family was on holiday at the time, and I will never forget all the paramedics and the tourists gathering around. Mum had gone to take one of my siblings to find a bathroom, and was stung while waiting as I recall. Her skin swelled and she felt faint and terribly ill almost immediately. The emergency personnel on scene surely gave her something to combat the venom, and thankfully, she recovered within a day or two......
