OMGosh that's not a good thing! Mind you, I have to take antihistamines a lot of the time because of the pollen our cats bring in on their fur.

I went through my entire childhood without any pets due to HIDEOUSLY bad allergy attacks. But now I just think the benefits of having pets outweighs the suffering. I have developed a certain immunity to our own cats, but still get really bad congestion when I go to cat shows or visit other owners / breeders.

It's amazing what we will put up with for the ones we love! I think if we can cope with the suffering then that's the preferred way, but of course there are some people who have an outright allergy, and go into bad asthma attacks and stuff like that, which is frightening for them. To have to give up a pet because of such a reaction would be tragic, but in some cases, I suppose it's necessary. Sometimes it's a matter of life and death even.
My daughter and I chatted about this not long ago, and agreed that if anything happened to any of us within the family, the cats would not go outside of the family - one or the other of us would hang onto them and continue loving them and caring for them.
I'm so glad you were able to overcome your reactions sufficiently to keep going, and yes, I do believe that if we're able to persist, we can develop a certain amount of immunity, which is a good thing!

I visited a doctor quite some years ago with both of my children, and she drew us pictures and chased the fear into us - warning that we'd eventually all die of emphysema. it really scared us thoroughly but only strengthened our bond to hang on to our animal 'friends' who are bona fide family members by now.
I don't know... can it possibly be worse than smoking???
