Description A commission I finished recently for a client in Germany; this is John Graham , Lord of Claverhouse and the Viscount Dundee, and his son Jamie. He was an early Jacobite hero who was killed fighting for King James in 1689 (though Presbyterians hated him-- one of his nicknames was Bloody Clavers).

Since Graham came to such a tragic end-- his son died young, and apparently his wife went mad-- the client wanted him in a rare happy moment with Jamie, while he was alive. I depicted the two standing in Graham's estate in the Sidlaw Hills, and dressed in 1680s fashion. For the background I went all out and painted a full-blown Scottish scene, complete with heather and a dramatic sky. The client was very pleased with it.

His wife remarried a captain of his troop, sadly both died in an accident in holland and buried in Kilsyth old parish church, where another intriguing story begins

He was a really tragic guy, according to everything I've heard about him. I think his tragedy rubbed off on his wife too...

Thank you! I wanted to make it quintessentially Scottish-- and I think the heather and overcast dramatic sky definitely helped.
