Description This is a piece of conceptual art (and potential future graphic novel cover) for a proposed TV show from Wild Child Productions, called "Soul Searchers." My client described it to me as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but with Buffy's mom instead of Buffy."

The bad guy to the left is a James Woods type, a sinister billionaire named James Colfax; the fortysomething heroine in the middle, named Elizabeth Coe, is based on Lauren Graham; and the young guy in the background is Lizzy's guardian and mentor, a mysterious shapeshifter named Baltazar. The Clyde Caldwell-esque jewel hanging from Mr. Colfax's fingers is a "soul cage," and imprisons the soul of Lizzy's recently deceased daughter (hence its apparently radioactivity). The bowl on the table holds similar soul cages, because Colfax is just that kind of guy.

Yes, it's cheesy, but that's intentional. That's Hollywood for you!

This is a really great pic. I like the concept, and the soul cage, I'm curious to see how everything goes.

I'm curious too! I'm excited (and nervous) at the idea of a bunch of big entertainment execs looking at my work...

Thank you! I don't know if you noticed, but I've been reading so much about Rome lately that a sort of Pompeiian color scheme made its way into the picture...

Anyway, the first pitch meetings will be next week! As I told Cyrion, I shall keep you all posted on the show's progress.

Well, I can't blame you! Reading about ancient Rome can be very addictive! And the colour scheme in your art is always so beautiful. But I had noticed it. The thing is - I love it!

I will keep my eyes open!

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but with Buffy's mom instead of Buffy."

That sounds excellent; I'd love to see more stories on TV about women older than 25.

I like your evil mastermind. His eyebrows are ace.

Love your illustrations, as always. The warm colors and non-static figures among the rich details are what makes your work stand out.

Seems that vampire stories are popular again, what with the Twilight series among books and Moonlight tv series. From your sketch alone, it's obvious the guy in the back, Baltazar (isn't that the name of one of the Magi?) will be the focus for a "heartthrob" character. And I guess since the babyboomer population shift is now mid-aged plus, that explains the older main character. Be interesting to see how this evolves. Particularly since the theme of the captured-soul-in-the-jewel is now a common plot among anime tales. A blending of West and East tastes, it seems. Can you keep us posted on this production?

Thanks for the comments! You hit the nail on the head- Baltazar is indeed the heartthrob character. (I was requested to make him look like young Hispanic actor Edgar Ramirez. [link] ) I'll keep you guys posted on the show's progress- the first meetings are going to be next week or so. Keep your fingers crossed- hopefully it'll get picked up!

Thank you- I hope it is! I am crossing my fingers that my clients K. & K. manage to sell this to one of the networks. They've scheduled meetings with the Sci-fi channel and Lifetime and several other places. *crosses fingers*

Good question! I should have mentioned it in the notes- it's a star-shaped birthmark, which is shared by three generations of the Coe family. This project was originally called "The Mark," actually.
