He's been an urban legend in West Virginia in the mid 60s before Creepypastas were around.

I've heard a few legends of the Mothman before, but his descrption is a bit vivied. Some say that him and Olwman are the same being. Is Mothman a new Creepypasta?

I was wondering why such a bird-like creature is called the "mothman".

The name was devised by a journalist who wanted a name that would catch people's eyes. "Batman" was a popular thing at the time, so he came up with a similar name to draw eyes to the headlines, so he named the creature "Mothman."
Around the time, it was more commonly known as "The Bird" by locals at the time. They didn't know how else to explain it.

Mothman is a monster in the field of cryptozoology. He is not a creepypasta character. Reports of the creature were made around since the 1960s, and did not originate on the Internet like Slenderman or The Rake.

It's a Native American legend. Hard to explain really. It's a malevolent spirit that possesses someone that has cannibalized another.

I agree, his description are always mixed and unclear. He looks like a bird, he's neck-less, this big, this short, ect. But atleast they stayed with the big red eyes XD I read this a while back: www.mothmanmuseum.com/MothmanL… mothman is like my third favorite cryptid creature.
