= PERSONALITY =

Physical Description: Intimidation isn’t about size, but the way one presents themselves. Cruz often holds himself confidently, head usually high unless he’s walking, very good posture and very unwilling to show submissive body behavior even among General Tamsen. His gait is similar to that of a big cat’s, slow, smooth, but every step is more powerful and sustaining than the last. His cropped ears and short tail are often held high and very straight, giving the appearance that he is always on alert. While speaking to him, you may notice Cruz’s movements are often stiff, his head may move around but his body will be still like a statue. Whether you’re his size or smaller, he will stand in your personal space, and he is not above intense eye contact (and your refusal to return the eye contact shows weakness to him.) This is called power posing, and yes, Cruz uses it a lot to his advantage.

For his actual physical description, well, just look at him. You have an almost 200lb dog, massive head, strong legs, and a thick muscular neck/torso. You can compare him to that of a weightlifter, massive but a strong massive. From the front, his chest is wide but proportional to his body type. You’ll notice plenty of loose skin, enough to cover his throat, but not excessive and distracting. Large paws and thick legs, great for running as well as walking through harmful environments with ease. Born to a small litter of pups, Cruz was chosen out of the mix for his puppy tenacity. Chosen by his handler, Mateo Rodriguez, an active duty police officer. Mateo and Cruz were fairly inseparable, they slept together, ate together, and relaxed together. While the early stages of puppyhood were simple for Cruz, it wasn’t until he was about 6 months of age that he was going to work with Mateo. Put into hectic and strict training classes and trained to act fast and harsh in situations Cruz may have otherwise ran away from. Training continued day in and day out until Cruz was a young 2 years old. During these training classes however, he was forced to stay in the overnight kennels provided to him. After almost a year a half of living alone in the kennel, Cruz was less than enthusiastic to be back “home” with Mateo, finding that his once best friend was now married with a smaller human on the way. While Cruz essentially made no efforts to rekindle his ‘puppy love’ for Mateo, Mateo did try to play occasional fetch and take Cruz for walks, but Cruz was more interested in marking territory than paying attention to his human. Cruz worked extensively, everyday, with his human for the police force, becoming a protection dog. He was often used to subdue and take down perpetrators without getting fearful. And while you’ll find nicks and small scars across this dog, he never sustained any awful injuries from working but he’s still very tough. Around 3 years of age, Tatiana was born, and something about this small baby and her mother Maria sparked a new interest in Cruz. Watching the bond between the mother and child reminded him dearly of Mateo and him. Though he recognized his relationship with Mateo had changed, he began to get very close to Maria and the baby. [7:45 am] Cruz is let out to take a quick piss, they’ve gotta be there before 8, but Mateo is always a few minutes late anyways. Sniffing around the front yard, he says a quick hello to Tamsen on the other side of the fence. Cruz let’s her know that today smells like rain, but he hopes he doesn’t rain too hard.
[7:58 am] Thrown into the back of Mateo’s pick up, the two quick make their way down to the station, Mateo is not mindful at all of stop signs or speed bumps.
[8:15 am] Finally arrived, Mateo hops out and rushes inside, likely to clock in. Cruz is left in the back of the car but waits patiently until Mateo comes and gets him.
[8:26 am] Cruz notices a flock of people leaving from the back of the station, a few car screeches in the back, but he can’t really make out what’s going on. He wonders if Mateo is in the flock and lets out a few barks, but doesn’t hear anything back and settles down in the pick up.
[8:30 am] Cruz is getting extremely bored, but maybe Mateo’s just in a meeting? He decides to take a quick nap.
    [8:50 am] Waking up disoriented, Cruz immediately notices thick black streams of smoke rising into the air all around him, on the buildings in the city, everywhere. What the hell? The station seems empty, and Cruz takes his chances, hoping out of the truck; his collar attached to a chain slips from around his neck. Going up to the door and windows, the station is empty, papers on the floor, guns left on the desk and it still looked like coffee was brewed on the counter. Getting an intense beating in his chest, there was something very wrong, Mateo wasn’t here. God where were any of them?
    [9:00 am] Cruz immediately begins running home to check on Maria and the baby, they never wake up so early, they still have to be home in bed, right? Right. He felt a unwanted tinge of panic that made him run faster, passing by abandoned cars and a few bodies in the road. What the fuck.
    [9:05 am] Tamsen is in the middle of the street with a few other dogs, yelling out to Cruz, “The humans are gone! We checked every hous-”, and while he was looking at her, his body passed by anyways running straight into his house through the doggy door. Cruz began checking every niche and corner, and the more he checked, the more whines began to come out of his mouth, and the more frantic he became.
    [9:20 am] He checked the crib 10 times, Maria’s bed 8 times, and just in case he searched the basement, the kitchen, and every bathroom. But there was nothing, not a sound or movement, except for the TV playing a colorful kid’s show that Tatiana watched every day. Cruz approached the TV, looking at her fresh fingerprints on the screen, and a small bowl of oatmeal on the ground next to his paw. He stood for a while, in disbelief that his family disappeared, hate in his heart - maybe if he had checked on Mateo in the first place, maybe if he had ran quicker, maybe then…
