Description Its been a great afternoon for storm clouds.
Big tall cumulonimbus with lightning and heavy rain.

Lansdowne escarpment, a view from my front verandah looking north.
I think I had burnt tea by this stage.
Give me good storm clouds over eating any day.
Mmm, maybe, I like eating too.

I am not at all for the suggested crop : instead, but this cannot be done afterwards, I would suggest the bottom black part smaller to give more room to the opposition between clear sky and heavy clouds. Such an unique perspective of a strange moment.
Classic-formatted minds (photo clubs...) tend to focalise on details : like here, the rainbow would be more remarquable in a all cloudy setting, visually...
1/3 position, in a 3 stripes setting. Those people follow rules, you should know.
But at the same time, the shot would lost its meaning, it's genuine originality.

Thanks for your valued comments.
I think you have a good point about minimizing the bottom darkness and emphasizing the opposition between the sky and cloud. This would make that statement a lot clearer and stronger.

I have many images from this storm I may go back and play with them.

Thanks again.

When it comes to composition, halas photo-club people juge "by the rules" (one third of something...and so on). It can help if you have no eye, but what is the point of being a visual artist or a photographer if you have no eye for composition ? Composition is just a mean to carry something, and only you can know what you want to carry.
So let your own eyes be the juges, and of course with photography it is better when it is done on the spot. It allows the freedom of playing after .

Well said.
I admire your work for its creativity. Not a slave to the common perception of the perfect photo.

All I can say is WOW! Fantastic cloud capture. Just awesome. What is that tiny spire thing on the horizon?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

suedollin In reply to abatnz [2008-02-04 04:28:06 +0000 UTC]

Hi there Alastair.
The spire is a repeater tower for Telstra and TV stations. Its quite tall and covered in some seriously big microwave dishes. There is a look out there as well. You can see the whole Manning valley, the ocean and probably about 100k of coastline. An awesome place. Should go up there to do some pano shots. Took my small telescope up there once and looked around. Really neat, but everything was upside down and back to front. Made me seriously sick, motion sickness I think. Weird.
Glad you like the cloud. It was an exciting thing to watch all afternoon. I have the best view for violent storms. Love it.

A lucky catch.
It was really neat how short and intense the colour was.
That was about 15 kms away.

I have the best view for watching storms.
I live high on a ridge and can see them come from the south and move towards the north. Hours of entertainment.
Hope to catch some good lightning images this summer.

If I never return to dA, I've been fried!!! LOL

When I was younger we lived on a very LARGE lake for a couple of years. We got to witness some pretty cool storms gaining momentum off of the lake. Those were some spectacular thunder storms once they went over the entire lake.

Please don't get fried! LOL

suedollin In reply to lisaluera [2007-12-06 09:30:53 +0000 UTC]

Now that would be spectacular, seeing a storm over water. I can just imagine the reflections.

Don't worry I won't get fried. I need to look after my camera!

So it's killing me because I want you to see this pot and how similar it is, but I'm not ready to post it yet. So I put it on my flickr account so you could see it. [link]

Oh WOW Lisa. That one is a stunner. I can see why you are so excited about it.
The swirling and colour represents that storm beautifully.
Even the pattern on the bottom right could be the lightning.

Big fave++++++++

Thank you! I am very proud of that one, but I was just so shocked when I saw you post that picture. I made my husband come in and look at it... I said... "Look... which pot does that make you think of?" He guessed right away!

That pot is definitely a collectors piece.
Each time I go to look at it, it reveals more.
Would love to see the other side too, maybe on dA.

Well done.
I wonder what name you will call it? LOL

Thanks for going to that trouble.
Wow. It gives me goosebumps.
It could be lots of different pots! So many different patterns, but they are definitely all part of that storm.

Amazing the coincidence of my photo and your pot emerging at the same time. Its a small world sometimes.

Thanks for sharing that Lisa.

You're welcome. Someone else on DA is buying the pot, and I wanted them to be able to see all the sides before they bought it so I posted for them and figured since you had mentioned wanting to see the other views I would send you the link.

It really was a cool coincidence with the photo and pot happening at the same time.

It was hard to let go of it. I've been picked up by my first gallery, so that was one of the pots that went to the gallery last weekend. I will post other sides of it on DA. What's funny is that I had already named it "Evening Storm" before I even saw your picture.

I love it when the names come easily.
A perfect name Evening Storm, along with the Galaxy one and Fissures.
It make a project feel complete when the name sits right!

I think I would be sad to let that one go too.

I'm having a hard time with it... but it's something I have to get over. My shelves quickly fill up with pieces I can't get rid of. Plus a very famous potter told me once, "It should hurt to sell a piece. If not, it's not one that is worth being out in the public". I thought that was really good advice.

suedollin In reply to lisaluera [2007-12-10 04:57:26 +0000 UTC]

Thats a great way to think about our work. I'm precious about my stuff too. I rarely sell anything. Too much of myself in it. I'm more comfortable with giving it away to special people. People who understand and appreciate what they are getting.

My beds have multiple layers of quilts and my cupboards are full of little fibre art pieces! Silly to hang on to it all. My kids have certain things earmarked for themselves, but otherwise I cling on to them. ????

Hard to let go.

Without the blue sky, you would lose the intensity of the cloud.
A compact but dense storm.
