Technically, he was 'made out to be' a 'young unicorn wizard' in the story of Tirek and Scorpan.
And if you take the expanded universe at face value, it's implied that the fall of the Sirens, Tirek's imprisonment, the end of Discord's rule and the founding of Equestria and subsequent coronation of the Royal Sisters all occurred within Starswirl's lifetime. How old he was during each of these events is entirely up for debate.
