Description digital experimentation in gimp, based on one of the less scribbly doodles from my fox doodle pages.

just more fur experimentation really... i found another fur tutorial that needed a tablet in the final stages [one day i'll learn to read ahead before starting] plus the drawing of individual strands which wouldn't be kind to my struggling mouse buttons so i went in my own direction about the halfway mark.

i also tried out a new eye tutorial, but as it made the fox look possessed by a goauld, i decided to change the eye half way through as well.

Done in Gimp ? Wow ... I knew gimp is awesome . I'm using gimp too and I started fox art recently . My first fox has fur but not even close to this realistic art . I worked mostly on fur directions for now ... Great art . This art skill would probably be my final goal to reach

wow, thank you very much for the huge compliment.

as kind and flattering as your comment is i still have to admit there are a lot of errors in there and eventually i hope i will be able to do much better still. =] it would apply to you too, as an artist =] it's one of the good/bad things that we improve with time and have the capacity for further improvement.

if you haven't already, search deviant art for 'fur brush tutorial' you'll get a lot of great tutorials on making realistic fur [many of which eventually went into making this], and on making fur brushes on gimp, like the one i used.

thanks for the favourtes too.

really good work on your ocelot too!

thank you very much.

yes it was a very educational experiment, i think i learned a lot from every one of these experiments, but there's always room for improvement though. =]

if you're going to post your experimentation with fox fur on deviant art i'd like to see it =] [it might help me pick up ideas for my next attempt ].

thanks for commenting, it's great to see people are still viewing and liking these.

I simply ADORE this fur.
I've been looking for a good fur tutorial.
Might I ask which tutorial you used? It could really help me out.

I think you did really well on this, good job!

sorry for the slow response =/ and thank you so much for the compliment i'm really happy people liked this one so much even with some perspective issues.

you know, i've been through masses of pages of fur tutorials looking and can't even find it any more, so i doubt it's on deviant art still.

ttp://yellow-eyes.deviantart.com/art/Wolf-fur-tutorial-2-38826575
and
[link]
is the closest.

what i did specifically instead of following the tutorial i had, was follow more of the second tutorial link i gave, and think about the spacing of the fur. i used darker/lighter colour shades overall for the shading and texture, but i used actual dodge and burn tools to make the hairs seem smoother, or more widely spaced/disturbed [like the effect when you smooth down a cat's fur vs when you rub it the wrong way]. the tutorial i did some of this from was keen on blurring/smudging out the larger fatter 'hairs' before the final detail stage and between each step, to make it look more like fur. the fur on the back side of the fox was all smudging the paint in lines to look like fur. =]

hope this helps some, best of luck to you.

The fur is really realistic. 8D I especially like the brown on the white-ish part. <3 Looks like a real fox.

hey, thanks tori i wasn't sure how the white fur turned out, so it's good, thanks for telling me. =]

i'm clean out of new fur tutorials to try, but everyone seems to like this version. i'm happy i stopped halfway through and took it in my own direction, or else it would've looked very different. =]

The fur and the eye are very cool and realistic-looking, made me wonder about the amount of patience one needs to make something like that, especially with (correct me if I'm wrong) a mouse!
If the nose would have been in a more sensible place/angle, I would have faved. Now you'll just have to be happy with a compliment.

i am happy with the compliment =] i haven't responded before now as i was hoping to do more digital painting regularly after this but problems occurred and i was unable to.

it is indeed all done by mouse and takes a phenomenal amount of patience, but when i see considerable improvement and a good result it makes it worthwhile, plus i am skilled at being patient when i need to be =] [even though this one did cause me some trouble]

i was, at the time of making this, slowly improving speed and skill in digital art [this took much less time than previous similar digital art], and hope i will continue when i can do things like this more frequently again.

I really like the way your fur style is developing! The angle on the face looks a bit odd here since most of the head seems to be in profile, but the nose and front of the muzzle are kinda 3/4. I like how you did the teeth though! And the eye is awesome, as usual. :3

Suikodeniac In reply to Kiriska [2008-05-27 04:20:56 +0000 UTC]

thanks i was especially wondering how people were going to react to the fur =] it helps me work out what's working and what isn't. not one of my pictures here with fur in them have started out exactly the same, though i am getting very used to the fur brushes i made for the wolf [which have been used to some degree in each picture since]. i should send you a note with a link to a picture i made between the ocelot and wolf which i won't be sticking on here [the one with the evilly difficult background] it has some neat teeth in it x3 likely where the practice for these came from.

and yeah, i see what you mean. i think that's my fault for basing it off a scrappy doodle ;] i normally fix up problems with the base image as i go along, but couldn't work out how with this.

the eye tutorial made very nice fantasy-ish eyes =] which looked brilliant in their original subjects on the tutorial page, but very wrong when worked into this picture... so i just redid the whole eye about halfway through. about the only thing left of the original eye tutorial i followed is the base colour choice they recommended [i would've chosen more of a brown-yellow] but i tweaked that too with darkening.

thanks and thanks for the helpful comment. =]

that reminds me, speaking of eyes... if you ever learn how, or come across a tutorial for the almost soap bubble effect an eye has [eg, covered in a film that's shiny, moist, reflective and completely different from the rest of the subject] please let me know, i'd really appreciate it. i've been trying to get something similar for ages, but apparently can't work it out on my own or find a tutorial that really shows it. it has to be possible though, as i've seen pictures with eyes that look real.

Well, it's really cool that you're learning and retaining so much from tutorials so quickly. I normally have to do something a thousand times before it's ingrained in my brain and I remember to do it. Your progress has been pretty amazing to me.

I have that problem with not fixing things when it's still simple - I always rush the first steps because I'm eager to get to the more exciting bits... thus, things don't get fixed. D;

I don't really recall seeing anything on that specific topic of eyes, but I'll definitely let you know if I do. If all else fails though, I would just find a ton of giant photos of eyes and try and paint those. :>

My pleasure! I can't resist commenting on well-executed drawings/techniques/concepts. With so many submissions coming in to DA each day, many wonderful pieces get 'lost in the crowd'. Just doing my part to uncover and give credit to the 'gems'.

then, thank you very much for considering my picture one of them. =]

it's true, so often whether a picture is even viewed can depend on who's looking at the split second it's in view when uploaded, and unless the artist is well known for other works it might never be seen.

which is a real pity, both for the effort the artist put into it, and for the people who might enjoy it never getting to see it.

My pleasure! I totally agree with you, so I take it as a personal challenge to try and view as many new or moderately recent works as I can (and offer encouragement whenever I find art that I enjoy).
