Well, her and Pluto, and I'm always torn about who I like more, but I've been reading the original manga lately, so it's this girl today!

So here's doodley redesign of her. Prepare for a wall o' text!

I don't know what it is, but Sailor Moon is like... ingrained into me. My art, my tastes, my subconscious, my GENERATION. No, not everyone likes it, but I've been surprised by how many do that I wouldn't have expected.*

SO. Like any good Sailor Moon fan, I had to redesign the Sailor Scout look. IDK, it's like something us artsy SM fans have to do at least once if not a thousand times through our lives/ art careers/ whatever. Maybe to test our mettle against our inspiration, maybe because we all know those were some of the most impractical battle outfits ever, maybe because we're all nuckin' futs, who knows!

I was inspired by a couple of other redesigns and used what I liked form them.
I really like the basic idea of =kaminary-san 's design, in that it still has a nice flowy skirt, but a much longer one (it reminds me of something Greco-Roman) and that the top looks armored. Her design also seems to combine a princess look (as they are princesses) with their sailor look. I wanted more of a solider/warrior look for my design, though. And while I think the front bow is fine, even for a more fierce look, I wanted to try to incorporate it in a way other than what it is, if that makes sense. XDDDD;

What I liked about ~animejennie 's redesigns is that she incorporated symbols from the Greek/Roman gods that the girls' planets represent. Her picture really makes me want to do my own redesign for each of the sailors. I, again, wasn't doing the princess look though, so I traded Venus's trademark bow for some symbols of Aphrodite: a scallop seashell (see "The Birth of Venus" by Botticelli) and red roses.

I'm rereading the Sailor Moon manga as it's re-released in America right now (LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE) and was blown away by how much I'd either forgotten over the years or never knew. When do the inners lose their awesome accessories?? That's a damn crime shame.

Anywho, for this picture I wanted to make a warrior/soldier look for my fave scout, Leader of the Senshi, First of the Senshi to fight, decoy Princess Serenity, etc. With her sword (was it in the anime?) and chains/whips she seems a much more physical fighter than some of the others. (Bubble beam!)

Last thought: Call me blasphemous, but I sometimes wish they'd reinvent the series in a more dramatic and takes-itself-seriously kinda way. Maybe it's cuz FMA (both of 'em) spoils me rotten that I critique so many other animes but still... There are some plot points that are just kinda there in the manga that are touched on and then dropped that I think could provide great tension for episodes upon episodes. And a couple redesigns to make things flow better, like the girls not looking EXACTLY like their Sailor/true forms when they're in "normal" mode, or more practical battle wear, or plot development for all characters, or less formulaic set-up or... I dunno. Just a refreshing (and good! D< ) reinvention.

*During my second year at my first High School, I was approached by someone while I was drawing. It was a big black dude in sagging pants, "thug life" across his shirt, and Tupac blaring from his headphones. He said to me, and I quote: "Ooh damn girl, you drawin' Sailor Moon? Man, that show was the SHIT. I loved that when I was a kid! Tuxedo Mask, man, he was my BOY, he got that R. Kelly thing goin' on." (with the mask) I laughed my ass off and we talked for a bit about our childhood cartoons. It was strange and beautiful.
