Description
We all have those moments where we either bawl our eyes out, pity our favorite characters, feel horrible for fans, feel the need to give someone a hug, stare at the ceiling for hours, or just carry on in our normal lives with a very crummy feeling. One of the best things about fiction is that it has the power to break people's hearts, cause others to care deeply for those they see suffer from consequences of their mistakes, and teach them something sad yet true about real life. When written and executed well, these sad moments can stand as some of media's most classic and memorable scenes to viewers, no matter how exactly it made them want to cry or feel upset inside. These scenes can be seen all over the place and cause people to feel sad for various different reasons, and that is why this meme template was born, for people to collaborate and understand what personally tugs on their hearts and what makes a heartwarming, bittersweet, or downright depressing scene deliver a strong impact.

Here is a brief explanation of what each reason means or implies:

(S)He Didn't Deserve It:
this scene/moment is sad and/or painful to watch because you see a character(s) go through torment, pain, and sadness they did nothing to clearly deserve.

(S)He Was One of the Best: this moment saddens you because something terrible, such as an injury, loss of valuable possession(s), act of unnecessary cruelty or DEATH, happens to the best/favorite character in the series

Close Ones Were Separated: whether it be the death of one or the last time they'll ever speak to each other, this reason is pretty self-explanatory.

It Affected Others: this moment heartbreaks or saddens you because of how it impacted or changed the other characters in the story, whether it be by making them cry, get angry at each other, fall into depression, want to hurt someone or something, etc.

His First/Last Words: the very first lines spoken by a character, or rather the lines they spoke before their sudden death, are enough to choke you up.

Subtext: similar to the reason on the "I Like/Dislike this Character" memes MiraculousLover22 , this moment saddens you because of the hidden meaning behind it, whether it connects to the overall theme of the story or reveals something dark about the characters.

Cruel: this is self-explanatory

Made Me Feel Alone: this scene is unpleasant and saddening to watch because it leaves you with a feeling of isolation and helplessness, like there isn't anyone to help you or hear you cry.

Pointed Out Mistakes: this moment is sad because it reveals some sad facts or major flaws about a character you loved or respected. An example is the scene from Zootopia where Nick asks Judy, "Are you afraid of me?!", to which Judy responds in a way that hurts Nick, something you wouldn't have fully expected her to do considering how nice, funny, determined, and well-meaning she'd been beforehand.

How it Concluded it Plot: self-explanatory; this moment had you bawl out in tears because of how it ended a story-line or sub-plot, whether it be by a heartbreaking cliffhanger or a tragic, unpleasant, and/or downright terrible ending.

Felt Unnecessary: similar to the reason for "(s)he didn't deserve it," but this more strongly implies instances where the saddening moment could have been written out entirely and it either wouldn't have changed the story or would have the made the viewing experience more pleasant.

Recalled Something Personal: this moment reminds you of something that made you cry or feel depressed once in your real, personal life.

Dreams Were Crushed: self-explanatory

Hard Work Went to Waste: this moment is unpleasant or sad to you because, after watching a character work his/her butt off for a long time trying to reach a goal, something happens that crushes that goal and everything he/she ever did was pointless or thrown out the window.

Failed Miserably: a character you liked had just made a horrible mistake that led to a horrible, life-damaging failure, and he/she has no choice but to suffer the consequences from that failure.

No One Helped Him: self-explanatory; a character is shown to be in a state of crisis, desperation, or emergency, but no one is there to provide him/her with the love/help (s)he needs. As a result, you're left staring at the screen shouting, "I WANNA HELP! BUT I CAN'T!", with a very sad, crummy feeling.

Hurt My Ship: whether it be a love triangle incident, loss of interest towards each other, an act of cheating/breaking up, or the death of one, the romantic relationship between two characters you fully, heavily support...is ruined or damaged, breaking your heart and making your inner-fangirl screech.

What it Forecasted: a certain line, action, visual, or exposition in this moment suggested a dark future or fore-casted horrible events. As a result, you start to feel upset and you overall find the scene sad to watch.

Cheese Made it Work: this moment is very melodramatic and full of cheesiness that desperately tries to pull on your heart strings as heavily as possible, but because of that cheese, you can't help but cry and feel alongside the character(s).

Came at the Wrong Time: this moment breaks your heart because it involves an incident, whether it be related to tragedy, romance, or, worse, character derailment, that felt out-of-place, too soon or too late, throwing away a lot of crucial plot points or meaningful qualities of the whole story. For instance, right when a character was getting better, developing like crazy, repairing friendships throughout a season...she abruptly betrays them, states she was only using them as a plan, and says as many bad things to them as possible ("Sundae Muddy Sundae"). You're left feeling sad as a result, and watching this scene again and again makes you feel more sad each time.

All Hope Was Lost: this involves scenarios like the ending of "Empire Strikes Back." Nuff said, self-explanatory

I Felt Betrayed: whether it be a horrible decision by the writers that felt like it was made just to tear fans apart, or whether it be that a character threw something away, changed for the worse, or literally betrayed another you're left feeling shocked, in denial, and heartbroken (especially if it was a character you loved the way (s)he used to be) .

Made Me Regret Choices: the actions, writing, or subtext of this moment make you question your own behaviors and past choices. If they were poor decisions and terrible mistakes, then you're left feeling very crummy and sad as a result, and this scene does not hesitate to let you forget that feeling.

Shown Expressions: the facial expressions, secondhand movements, body language, and overall emotions of the characters in this scene chokes you up. You want to desperately give them a hug and comfort them, but you can't.

Atmosphere: according to Merriam-Webster, atmosphere is "a surrounding influence or environment" or "the overall aesthetic effect of a work of art." Because of this specific moment's setting, whether, tone and aesthetic as mentioned, it delivers a very strong melancholy tone that saddens you whenever you watch it.

Music/Lyrics: pretty self-explanatory as well. A certain moment in fiction makes you cry because of the background song or music played.

Dialogue: the lines spoken by the characters is strong enough to grasp your emotions as something heartbreaking or meaningful occurs between them.

I Wanted to Cry but Didn't: self-explanatory

Applies to Real Life: either this moment was an accurate depiction of something horribly tragic that happened in real-life history, or it was a moment that taught you a very sad truth about real life, especially themes regarding coming of age, prejudice, the American Dream/failure, family, abuse etc.

Because it Did: off the top of your head, you can't make a clear reason as to why the scene made you cry or feel heartbroken. Something mysterious about it just...happened to work for you.

Meme belongs to me, but inspiration came from .

How it concluded a plot: Venom of the Red Lotus

How it affected others: Harry going into the foribben woods after learning he is a horcrux from Deathly Hallows pt. 2

Dialogue: "I lost you once, I lost so much" from Saving Captain Rogers (Avengers Assemble)

A lot of those moments make me sad too.

Oh, and a nice tip to know to when capturing these memes is to use the "Snipping Tool" or the Mac screen-shot functions. This makes your meme look less "static" and better in quality.

May I ask you if a Death of an Character can Hurt your Ship?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sukoshi13 In reply to Nikki1975 [2019-02-27 18:16:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes it can. If these two were a romantic couple you supported and one of them dies or leaves the other forever, or if they break up and a new love interest gets involved, that's a moment that hurts your ship.

In regards to the "No One Helped Him" section, could that also apply to a situation where maybe the character(s) present desperately WANTED to help, but, physically couldn't. Like the person in distress was impossible for them to get to, whether they wanted to be saved or not, and they were powerless to do anything?
