It all depends on the breakup/rejection.
This is how I see it:
if the person who is breaking up/rejecting you does it in a very mild calm easy way OR in a very blunt way, then there is no reason to be "heartbroken". Obviously they don't HATE you. They're just not interested in dating you, and that's fine. You'll get another chance to date someone else, don't worry.
However, if they're a complete asswipe about it, like "sorry. You're just a freak. No one wants to date you, and that includes me" then it is completely normal to feel "heartbroken". However, this actually does not occur often. People just tend to exaggerate a lot. Because of this, MOST "heartbreaks" are indeed self inflicted...

I agree.... I've been going though heartbreak for a few months now and I recognize I should have held my back form falling in love in the first place. But even so I sometimes doubt it can be all my fault for I could not keep myself back even with hours and hours of telling myself I had to stop.
