To keep it short, they are the results of successful necromancy, they have the same personality & memories they had when they were alive. However even with successful necromancy there was side effects. Such as needing to re-cast the spell that animates them, or else their body will start rotting. And the left eye can never be fully re-animated, so they covered it up instead X3
