“What is this stuff?” Poppy pushed her fingers into the small jar and traced the red dust across her palm.

“Cinnabar,” Sonny said. “It’s like Mayan paint. They’d use it to highlight their art. It’s on statues and stuff.”

“Really? That’s so cool.” Poppy bit her lip and dipped even more of her fingers in, caking her hand in cinnabar. With her free hand, she gripped Sonny’s wrist and pulled his arm toward her. Slowly, she pressed her fingers against his until his entire hand was stained red.

“You’re probably not supposed to be using it up,” Sonny murmured.

Poppy laughed and wiped her hand across his face. “I’m claiming you,” she said in a solemn tone. “This is my mark.”

“You know this stuff can be highly toxic, right?” Sonny said, raising his eyebrows. Poppy shrugged, smiling, and then kissed him, her hands trailing down his neck. Without thinking, he pulled her closer and held her face, leaving dark, smeared fingerprints along her cheeks. After a few moments, it felt like they were covered in the stuff.

“You’re so going to get me fired,” he whispered against her lips.

“Not unless they catch us—” She paused dramatically. “—red-handed.”

Sonny recoiled, his face pulled into a mask of horror. “I. Cannot. Believe. You. Just. Went. There. Take my advice and stay away from puns. Far, far away. Wow. I don't even know if I can take you seriously after that."

“You still love me, though,” Poppy laughed.

“Mm-hm,” Sonny agreed, kissing her again.

Oh, you crazy kids. Can't keep your hands off each other. XD They'll probably be dead from cinnabar inhalation in the morning.

But guess what? I made them canon.
