Description Today, I decided to study physics. That lasted for about two minutes. And then I was like, "MUST FINISH MEME... WHICH IS FUN... UNLIKE PHYSICS!" And that's how this meme came to be. We will see how I feel about this in the morning when I take my test. X(

Anyway. I've been wanting to do a meme for POTO for the longest time (that's Phantom of the Opera for all you lame people). I really want to do more fanart for it anyway. We'll start with this.

You really don't have to read the rest unless you're a really dedicated phan and will know what I'm talking about... or if you are just lame and want to figure out who wrote the book and stuff............ 'Cause these comments are freaking long.

1.) Ooooh, Sunni is color-coordinated with the rest of the masquerade movie ensemble . Unlike Christine and Raoul. Who choose to wear the most obvious, non-discreet costumes they can find. What's wrong with them? Are they stupid? YES. Secret engagement, my behind.

2.) ERIK! I had to draw book Erik here because... he is freaking awesome. This is when he's at the top of his crazy game. I mean, he has snapped at this point. And the whole scorpion/grasshopper thing is just too delicious. BAH. (Also, for you lame people who have seen the movie and not read the book, YES ERIK REALLY DOESN'T HAVE A NOSE IN THE BOOK. It's true.

3.) Erik/Christine. I don't know who wouldn't pick this as their fave ship... I could count the R/C guys I know on one hand. (Not that I don't think R/C has its merits. Heck, even Giry/Erik has its merits....) But, OMG THESE TWO. WIN. And also! I am not lying about the boobs thing. I mean, I love the ALW musical as much as anyone, but is the cleavage necessary? [link] [link] Sandra Joseph, I am talking to you!

4.) Carlotta, like all the characters, grew on me. I used to hate her, but I think she's kind of fantastic now. This is partly because all her outfits in the movie are freaking amazing, and I love all her hats, so I don't know what she's complaining about there. Anyway, my favorite outfit is the pink affair she has during "Notes I." Although her Il Muto dress is gorge, too...

5.) STORY TIME! So, I was 14, and it was my first year of high school, and I was in band class with the most awesome band director ever, Smalls. <--not his real name. Smalls loved musicals, and he wanted us to watch the new POTO movie. Well, we were all generally pretty disrespectful and loud and not concentrating at all, which made Smalls angry. So I finally started paying attention to it around "Angel of Music" or something, and then I was kind of lost, so I asked a simple question. And he simplified the story very, very well, I think. XD

6.) I can't draw kisses, I'm sorry. So I draw my two favorite scenes: one from the musical, one from the book. Both make me cry.

7.) Versions:
- ALW Movie (2004): The beginning of my love affair and pretty much the most awesome movie ever. I don't care if the deformity sucks, the movie is fantastic. And Gerry is... omg... an actual good Phantom. DEAL WITH IT.
- Lon Chaney (1925): GREAT! It's silent, so I advise watching the one with the sondtrack added. It's very close to the book (except for the FAIL END), and really cute.
- David Staller (1990): It made me laugh. Really, really hard.
- Robert Englund (1989): Awful. Horrible. I got it for $7, and it was a complete waste of awfulness. Most OoC Erik evar.
- ALW Music: Haven't seen the play. CRY FOR ME. But the music is the most brilliant thing ever created. Seriously.
- Yeston/Kopit Musical: Really cute. The music is... okay. There are only a few songs that I love, but it's a really different take on it. The story is good. I love how it starts when Erik and Christine meet, so you actually get to see them getting to know each other... sort of. And Raoul is German or something. It's weird. I kind of hate the end, though.
- LEROUX! Bestest version! Erik is creepy and awesome and sad and somehow sexy, too. READ IT LOVE IT.
- Kay! Okay, I don't even care, this is the best prequel book ever. Erik is completely true to the original, and this book is just so great. There are so many fantastic moments. Including the whole "genitalia in a jar" quote. I love you, Susan Kay.

(Also, I've read one other book called The Angel of the Opera, which was Sherlock Holmes meets the Phantom. It was also lol-arious, and it had a sickeningly sweet ending where the Phantom fell in love with Holmes's blind musician lady friend. Mmmmmyeah.)

I'm not sure how Raoul did not end up in this, because he is some kind of awesome.

Do the meme. It's awesome. But it should have been longer.

Finally! I WORSHIP YOU, MY FRIEND! I finally have found another phan who has actually read the novel. You see, because of POTO I took up classical singing some years ago and now it's my main hobby and great passion. My hobby, classical music overall and POTO are all very sacred things to me and I've been taken down so many times by these idiotic 'phangirls' (only have seen the movie, don't probably even know a book exists): they gush about how they totally love opera now and "GERRY IS SOOO HOT PHANTOM AND ROSSUM IS THE BEST OPERA SINGER EVAH" but when I try to introduce them to Leroux!- or Chaney!Erik they turn them down because "they're too gross ewww"... And then tell me my idols, actual opera singers like Diana Damrau, sound like unbearable screaming.

Now, I don't dislike Butler personally. I simply think he wasn't that well suited for the role: At least the way I've interpreted both the novel and the musical, the entire point in Erik's character is that he's really hideous-looking, nearly monstrous person but, in sharp contrast, has got great talent in many forms of art (music, architecture, illusions..) and especially a great singing voice. After all, he was the one who taught Christine to be an opera star almost at Carlotta's level. So, the reason I didn't like the film is that it contradicts my view of Erik so much - Butler isn't a classically-trained singer. The lameness of his deformity can't really be blamed on him but the lazy make-up artists instead, though

Awesome! I love the book too. One of my favorite scenes that is never done in performances is Erik showing up at the Persian's house, "dying of love". All of that dialogue from Erik is so heart-wrenchingly wonderful. What's with the Persian always being passed over and blended with Madame Giry anyway?

But, like you, my love affair with POTO began with the 2004 version, where Gerard is sexiest movie phantom ever. I don't care if he's no Michael Crawford. I listened to that soundtrack every day since I saw the movie for the first time until its DVD release (5 months straight). When my mother gave me the deluxe soundtrack as a present, I actually began to hyperventilate/cry (no lie) which has never happened in the act of me receiving gifts before.

Which of the awful movie versions has the terrible tenor and Erik becoming deformed because he spilled acid on his face? I hated that one.

sunni-sideup In reply to InkHeart17 [2012-04-04 02:31:50 +0000 UTC]

He gets acid dumped on his face in a number of them. It might have been the 1943 one? I'm not sure.

And YES, the last chapter of the book brings me to tears EVERY TIME. It's such a beautiful scene and should really be included in more adaptations! I know there was one POTO radio play that included it. I'd like to get my hands on that one because from what I've heard, it sticks closely to the book and the actors are pretty wonderful.

sorry i just found this today!
is Leroux Erik really that hot? if so WHY CHRISTINE DIDN'T YOU CHOOSE HIM! i mean i would have tough his deformity was something more than that he has no nose (sorry i haven't read the book i will be putting it on my Christmas list tough in fact i will do it right now! done it!) but seriously! i really want to see the musical in the West End but i haven't had the time to do it yet! i have only seen the film but i have seen many versions of Christine and Erik in clips from youtube and i can tell you my thoughts of Emmy and Gerry as them has turned right up side down i used to love them as Christine and Erik but now not so much! i despise Raoul! i am like you a huge Christine/Erik shipper i think that is why i like the concept for Love Never Dies (I LOVE THE MUSIC OK!) i do wish to read Kay's prequel book and i do wish to read "The Phantom of Manhattan" <- my love for Love Never Dies is to huge for me not to read the book it is partially based on!
A very funny true story you have there! i think i was 9 in 2004! yeah it really does sum up the whole story "HE WANT'S TO DO HER" i couldn't describe it better my self!

Oh my god, the ending, it was so sad! Then again, I cried for almost the entirety of the book. Especially through Persia, it was heart-wrenching...

You're welcome!

Love this, and I appreciate your nod to Leroux. I have an incredible distaste for the 2004 version, but its nothing against any of the performers. Its two things, one: I don't like how they show all the Phantom's secrets and tricks and destroy the mystery. (Also, him hitting on a little girl is just wrong) Two: the no-nothing idiot phan-girls who faun over Gerry butler and rant about how "they'd stay with Erik" and they have no idea how awesome and perfect the original novel is. ahem yes, but I am pleased to know that you are not one of them....Well I've rambled quite a bit now, sorry for that.

The meme is funny and your art is good, brava!

Yes, the movie has its issues, for sure. I'll always prefer the book version, but I love the movie for its own strengths. At the very least, it introduced me to the perfection of the novel. Thanks so much!

I agree with you: GB may not have had a great singing voice, but his acting made up for it.
The silent version would have been the most accurate version if it wasn't for that ending: and the worst part was that you couldn't feel sorry enough to Erik in the end.
I Wish to see the musical: I was originally going to NY for my graduation trip and go see it, but I ended up changing my mind due to lack of intrest and now I cant change it back since the trip's been paid for.
And I thank you for making Leroux!Erik even more likeable now.

sunni-sideup In reply to HolyMaiden [2010-06-03 00:54:19 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! Yeah, the ending of the Lon Chaney one is kind of awful. Apparently the original cut of the movie was a lot closer to the book, but audiences wanted a slapstick chase scene, so they changed it. *GR*

The musical is sooooo excellent. I finally got to see it live.

There was an unmasking which was wonderful. The not letting Erik's face seen is a genius touch. No freak show, just what the imagination can supply and whatever the imagination can summon is worse that anything they can show (unless you're a phan and you're attracted to noseless people, of course XD )

I just like comparing Phantom deformities, so I would have liked to have seen it, but it was still an interesting take. Definitely see your point about the imagination being worse. Ah, well. I'm just elated that they had enough time to build the relationships in the story.
