Wonderful work! I really love this, there are only a few flaws I found that you could edit to make this even better. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

First of all, you need a more definite light source. I can't tell from just a glance where the light is coming from. Only by looking very closely do I see the rays in the top right corner; but even then the whole image is about one brightness tone. Try lightening up the parts of the forest that the light is coming from (between the trees, top right corner, etc) with the dodge tool or you could try painting over the areas with white and then trying different blending modes such as overlay, screen, soft light, etc to see which fits best. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/n/n… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Nod"/>
After that you'll have to darken the rest of the background that the light doesn't hit. Then you can proceed to the shadows and highlights on the horse, as they would also need to be adjusted.

The shadow looks great, but it should be at a different angle due to the light source. More to the left/behind the horse, believe. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

I love the colors in this image, they match together so well! The flower really stands out, which is both good and bad. It's good because it brings attention to the meaning of the image, but at the same time it also takes attention away from the horse. So I might just make it a tiny bit smaller and darken it a bit. Love the idea though! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Aww"/>

Great job with the mane and tail, all I really can say is use a smaller brush (2-4px) for the base and then add in the highlights and shadows with an even smaller brush (1-3px). That should help it so it isnt so blocky. You have a nice flowing feel with it though! Great start, just need a few editing points. ^^

Oh, and the light rays should probably be a lot lighter in color..I would choose the brightest yellow/white from the background as you can find and paint them with that color. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Overall this is absolutely amazing! Don't let my opinions bring you down - I'm only trying to help you make this even better.

Hope that helps! Keep up the awesome work! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/t/t… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Thumbs Up"/> e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart"/>

Thanks so much for your time!

I can defintitley see how all the things you suggested will help- especially the ones about the light source. The light rays were already on the forest stock image I used, but I can see how the way I used it the color of the rays should be altered a bit, same with adding more value to the shadows and highlights on the trees, etc. The shadow does appear to need to be pushed a bit back

Same with the mane, I can defintiley add some smaller hairs to make it more natural, and can also darken the flower some.

Thanks again!

your prize critique from the equine-design contest(;

i think these images fit together really well. good job on that part(;
i believe your hair is a bit too stringy. looks great color-wise, it's just really.. stringy i like to set my brush to fade-out when i paint hair(;
your flower is too bright for the piece. use your curves, color balance, and dodge/burn tools to fix this(;
work on your hoof-to-grass blending (if you're wondering, i'll be coming out with a tutorial on this sooner or later)
sorry this is on one of your earlier works! (although the hair and grass i noticed on the others too)

hope this helps! (:

I am glad the piece seem to fit together, but I do definitley have issues with grass-feet blending and fading hair out haha. I am getting a bit better with the hair

insomatic-studios stole the words from my mouth! Overall looks good, but yes the mane is a little course and the horse seems to stand out a little too much, needs a little more blending at the edges to soften your cropping and look a little more natural...

insomatic-studios [2011-02-02 16:24:59 +0000 UTC]

this is a very lovely piece but there are two things that catch my eye. The mane strands seem to be a bit thick,maybe try and smudging them,or even painting them on with a smaller brush. The cutting as well, is a little rough in places.Overall i like the concept.
