If anyone is overrated it probably be May considering how many sick fanboys she has, no offense though

You have a point, every character has their flaws. As for Misty, part of me wishes they did something with her goal. Other than that good character. May on the other hand received a HUGE bashing from Misty fans for replacing her. Pokeshippers latched on to the closest rival ship, fearing that May might become Ash's love interest. Which is pretty stupid on their part, I mean the writers aren't stupid enough to make May Ash's love interest after getting rid of Misty. Now that would receive a huge lashing. Than halfway through they created Drew, and later on Harley to be her rivals. I think the reason why you liked her more in Kanto was because of her character development, she was no longer a rookie. She was improving to the point for Drew to consider her more of a threat. The rivalries we're more intense, many people thought May would make it to Sinnoh, but we're proven wrong when May made her confession. Her rivals on the other hand were a little iffy, many thought they wouldn't make it passed BF. Basically,May was a test run on how far they going to giving a female protagonist a goal. When they saw how well May was doing, they decided to improve on that idea. That's why Dawn did so well, she was given a goal, rivals, and her own story. Due to it being a few years since Misty's departure they made Dawn and Ash bond, a bond that surpasses May and Ash's mentor and student relationship. You were probably one of the many May fans who were upset with her departure. Dawn received a massive bashing being called 'May/Misty's second replacement' , a 'mary sue,' a 'may clone's, which was absurd considering they weren't alike, aside from working towards the same goal they weren't alike the slightest. I believe the reason for why Dawn was treated so well, because she was something different, Dawn didn't have a cannon 'crush' on Ash,She didn't have a mentor-student relationship going for her either. They took elements that proved successful in the past and tried reusing them. For starters, they made Dawn and piplulp have a rough beginning to them being besties. They gave her the concept of having a famous parent, the goal of a coordinator. Since contestshipping proved to be successful, they decided to recreate it with penguinshipping, due to Kenny's lack of appearances penguinshipping took a flop and wasn't as popular as it's predecessor, so it was scrapped. Unlike May, Dawn's rivals weren't as popular, leaving room for Ash and Paul's rivalry. Ash and Paul's rivalry were one of the biggest things in pokemon since forever! It was possibly one of the main things that made Sinnoh popular. Paul was different, compared to the other rivals, He wasn't arrogant, he wasn't a goody-goody,he was in a league of his own. He was cold, harsh, he didn't treat his pokemon with respect, didn't compliment them on a job well done, release them if they didn't meet his standards, he looked down on those who treated pokemon with love and care. This enraged Ash and he strove to prove Paul wrong, they were one and the same, half's of the same coin, total opposites, people Loved it! I admit, Dawn was a bit overrated. I don't know about piplulp though, he received a huge lashing from others. He was Sinnoh's mascot, what do you expect? Now Iris on hand is different case, I haven't seen much of Black and White so I don't know her character, but what I DO know is Iris isn't well liked, among pokemon fans, she gets bashed all the time being called, 'misty's replacement, misty 2.0, and a misty clone' among other things. I don't know where you've been hanging out, but in my honest opinion Iris is HIGHLY underrated. Everywhere I look Iris is being ranked as the lowest, I know their Iris fans out there but there hard to come by. She's been called 'annoying' and people have said they didn't like her character, a failed attempt at a misty clone'. Black and White went down in ratings because the characters weren't well liked. It didn't take untill X and Y for the ratings to rise again. I agree with you on Serena being overrated, her goal wasn't really well established, her rivals were bland, and her character wasn't that great,in my opinion. I agree with you entirely, at first I was willing to give her chance, to prove me wrong, surprise me. I tried to like her but I just couldn't! She is just Sooo boring, her crush became her ENTIRE character, it WAS So Annoying! I believe her popularity stem from her crush on Ash, and her looks, she was basically a Barbie doll, blond hair, blue eyes, pretty face, always waits for her 'man', she wasn't like the others, they were tough and didn't a man to save them.
I could basically go into rant but I'm not going to do that.
I think having the crush come later than right from the start is great idea
Serena fell for Ash when she was lost in the woods and spent her journey looking for him, creepy stalkerish in my opinion. And that ship is pretty cheesy. I wouldn't call Serena Ash's childhood, they met at camp and didn't formally meet until years later. A good ship has the first meeting, constant interactions, relationship building, conflict (to help the relationship grow) . Than one of the characters has to go through a 'moment of realization', it's when a character starts falling for the other. It shouldn't come out of nowhere, there has to be point where the character makes the realization (or other could be those 'love at first sight' situations, where a character is attracted to them from the start.)They are drawn to them somehow, sometimes they would understand immediately and give chase, other time they either oblivious to or in denial, so they brush it off
They pay that person extra attention, get to know them and some point go through thier 'moment of realization', and see them as more than a pretty face.
At some point they would start showing signs, wether or not it's intentional or not is up to the character.Depending on the type of relationship, is how the Love interest would respond, sometimes they would go in for the kill, brush off the feelings, or be oblivious to the others advances. The possibilities are endless. I could name a few instances where these instances could apply, but I won't. As for Bonnie, I haven't watched much of X and Y to see her character, but I do remember her to be quite annoying. I haven't watched Sun and Moon either, so I can't tell you anything.

Yup.
- With Misty, she could have gotten a goal in doing water Pokémon tournaments with the Whirl Cup being like the Grand Festival yet I guess the writers didn't thought to give her a goal since it seems like she was popular regardless esp for her character/personality. Also I think having her as a gym leader was their only way to give her a goal at the last minute since it can help her become a Water Pokémon Master in that path. Funny enough, ppl have pointed out on how missed the opportunity went for Misty as Hoenn had alot of water with multiple Water types.XP I think that's true yet the show was gonna cancel so they had to do something to make the show fresh.
- Reading this about May, you actually made a valid point on how stupid it would been for the writers to make her as a love interest after Misty departing as the backlash would be intense. Yeah, that's something that I enjoyed May's contests more in Kanto for she was at her best over her Hoenn run. I think that's good that the writers decided to elevate her contest goals further so they can try to do the same in the next region. Overall I did enjoyed her rivals, I know I loved Harley from the start as his pettiness was hilarious. Drew's development was actually solid as he saw May less like a rookie as time went on.
- Definitely agreed on how the years since Misty's leaving can lead Ash to establish a great bond with Dawn since maybe they didn't do much for him with May as they probably wanted to play it safe. I really like that the writers gave Dawn as a co-star status and despite on her backlash from fans for the previous girls, her story was basically a mixture of both. She has Misty's ability to bond with Ash although this leans on more on friendship than implied relationship while her contest run was really spot-on, I like that her depression arc was added to her development as a coordinator alongside the theme of wanting to be like her famous parent yet learned to be a bit different than her. Penguinshipping, I agree that it flopped from Kenny not showing up much despite it was supposed have similar treatment like Contestshipping. I didn't realized on how the unpopularity of Dawn's rivals would lead for build-up for Ash and Paul's rivalry. Well I guess I can understand somewhat yet Zoey was the only decent rival while others like Kenny and even Ursula pale in comparison as being the rival with a crush and a petty rival from their predecessors. Yes, Ash's rivalry with Paul remains one of the best ever storylines that the show has done in its 20 years. I really enjoyed on how Paul was handled for being a rival and a character whose beliefs is to have strong Pokémon or otherwise he releases them. He has his own belief which clashes with Ash's and the latter's beliefs he looks down upon b/c it reminds me of his brother. As for Piplup, yeah he is Sinnoh's mascot so maybe having him out of his ball was refreshing since Togepi's run alongside being comic relief which Pikachu once was.
- As for Black and White, although I enjoyed it on the beginning, it was a huge nosedive from its predecessor. Basically it acts like a soft-reboot and including Ash in this region become a joke from how far his development from Kanto to Sinnoh were all for nothing. His team was a letdown and it could match Kanto and even Johto for having to rely on the three starters on the same team over the others'. Yeah, I'm aware on Iris being underrated, it's just common on how ppl hates her catchphrase.XP but more than that, it's true that she wasn't very popular amongst fans for her role as being the snarky female companion is reminded too much like Misty yet I think her goal to being a Dragon Master/type specialist was a bit more better than Misty's goal years back. I think I also agree on how hard BW was trying to be like Kanto, just the plots were more watered down. It's probably the least liked region since Johto as so many elements were terrible to watch including the league. The promises to have a filler arc was wasted from including made-up islands just to built up for XY. I honestly don't know why this was allowed for how bad it went. Going back on Iris, I did enjoyed some of her character and personality but I understand that she's underrated from how sloppy the region went for her.
- For Serena, glad you agree on how overrated she is especially being based on her looks and her canon crush on Ash. It was a waste to have her goal end abruptly as having three keys wasn't enough so to make it seem longer she loses twice. The rivals were poorly done and yes, bland seems to go well for each. These girls were basically punching bags despite on how their main role was supposed to be reminded of the character roles in the past. Shauna is the friendly rival which she could become a threat as she's more experienced, Miette is basically the Harley-esque rival with bits of Ursula to make her seem feisty and a threat but she's all bark but no bite. Then Nene/Nina is basically Kenny but worse. This became too easy for Serena to pick up her goal in rushed fashion. Serena was okay, meh to me and yeah, it would been better to develop a crush later on as it does seem stalkerish to find Ash again after seeing him in camp years prior. You're right that she's isn't much of Ash's childhood friend (I wish she was for maybe filling in Leaf's role) as they didn't know each other much in camp so they managed to formally meet years later. I also agree on how establishing a relationship is supposably established between two characters.
i guess the writers took the easy way and paint over how Kalos being France is going to involve romance and they wanted the main girl to like Ash so the ratings would rise more. It would feel interesting to have a female companion to develop feelings later on unless Misty counts sorta. All in all yeah, Serena seems to be this example on how she tends to be these female characters who relies too much on the male character to save them while others were more independent. It's okay if you hadn't watched much XY and Sun and Moon. It's gonna take time to have the current cast to develop into being memorable characters by then.

I definitely agree with your points Just curious, but do you have any end - game ships you are hoping to see. Or, do you think the anime is going to end anytime soon? Misty, might just count, I'm not sure though I just hope the writers give their characters better treatment, the anime will suffer more if they don't improve. That's just the problem with long running shows in general, there's always a point where they butch up so badly there's a point with no return
