... today in the series of "boring painting names" I bring you an illustration of a Night Elf... who wears the heritage armor! It was just recently added to the game, and looks way cool if you ask me! It's the same thing that the vanilla WoW Night Elves were seen wearing, but it wasn't an actual armor in the game until now, which is a great blast from the past, especially considering the release of the classic server this summer.(just a little edit here: apparently this was the archer armor, not even the heritage one. Whops. Too late now!)
I realized that I hadn't done a simple half/full-body illustration of a WoW character in a while and this one turned out to be a really nice experience, I should definitely do a few more when I get the time! Drawing metal is still quite difficult, especially when it's.. white? But I think I'm staring to get the hang of it!
Also, did you know that the Night Elf markings have quite important meanings? I looked them up out of curiosity and there was quite a lot of lore behind it!

Interesting take, well done on capturing the Night Elf spirit. It's a shame that their in game counterparts were dumbed down from their Warcraft Original counterparts, but that happened with almost every race in game especially after the cataclysm. Still, Night Elves were the most changed, and I want my savage fey warriors back.Β

A lot more characters have an anti hero vibe to them. It is somewhat excusable in WoW to overlook this because the lore is condensed, but I'll never forgive what they did to Illidan. They fixed it later, but we still have quests focused on nature stewardship instead of the more Machiavelli "Ends justify the Means" of wild survival that was paramount to original Night Elves.Β
Spoilers from here on out.Β
Tyrande kills several humans in defense of the forest, it really isn't justified since they are fighting against the Demons, and it is mere superiority and conceit than anything. This isn't only a one time thing or racially motivated, since she kills her own troops in Illidan's freeing jail cell, solely because she misses Illidan and is willing to put self emotions over to collective whole and benefit for her tribe.Β
I honestly love it when good characters do evil things, it makes their characters more realistic and better than a tripe Fairy Tale.Β
Then we have Malfurion, who went from someone capable of soloing a DemiGod to a pushover whining and had to be rescued by his friends. The Cataclysm portrayal of him was excellent, but in Legion: I have no idea why they didn't scrap the Xavius plotline instead of the aberrative mess they gave us.Β
Illidan is somewhat obvious, he was a good character, a Hero with a noble heart, and less morally reprehensible than Tyrande, and the lore entirely abandoned him and made him into a villain. Until Legion. It was somewhat ironic and disappointing that we got a better Illidan by making his brother a worse character, but I suppose that's blizzard's philosophy since they can't think in terms except for Hero and Villain.
Tyrande bitches about how noble she was and how Illidan was a jerk. There is a reason why most Alliance players hate her, and honestly her character dilution was the worst. She went from my favorite to my least.Β
And the main issue is the flavor of the player. You are a hippie like medic, which isn't bad, but contains a bit of a repetitive and useless and unsatisfying nature. The other side of the light and shadow dichotomy is gone. I can't remember the last time I did a vicious thing as a night elf. Taking care of animals is nice, but we want to show them our strong and wild side not only hide in a corner and lament. We need to at least scalp a few Trolls or something, they do the same to us.Β
This is not to say I hate Night Elves in the game. There is a reason all my mains are Night Elves or Blood Elves or Trolls. The legacy is quite detailed, and the lore in depth, but there is a commercialism that wasn't present before and has to do with the continued environmental takeover with weak ideas targeted at philosophers like Thoreau and Muir who appreciated nature but knew it had a dark side.Β Β

True, the characters have changed quite a lot. I must admit I'm not so deep into the lore side of things but what you're saying seems to make sense. WoW has had a lot of good and bad character and world archs, I think, the latest big one ofc being the "morally gray" Sylvanas. I suppose when the game has gone so far they kind of have to "force" it to keep going and that causes the stories and lore to change. Also, multiple people writing the stories and I suppose there's some pressure from the PR team as well.. Yeah.
And that's actually a true point about them being hippies now - the Tauren were the ones I'd think of when it comes to taking care of nature and things like that.
