Description PRINT AVAILABLE!!! WHOOHOOOO!!

Fastest animal on the planet... clocked at 220 mph in a dive (i think) I love the color and pattern of this raptor. Everthing about it is dynamic and screams speed. 4h,2h,hb graphite on 8.5"x11" acid free

In responce to a suggestion from someone that the Botfly is faster then a Peregrine Falcon, i looked it up, here's what i found:

-

It was reported for many years that Cephenemyia (Deer Botfly) was the fastest of all flying insects, cited by the New York Times and Guinness Book of World Records as traveling at speeds of over 800 miles per hour. The source of this remarkable claim was an article by entomologist Charles H. T. Townsend in the 1927 Journal of the New York Entomological Society, wherein Townsend claimed to have estimated a speed of 400 yards per second while observing botflies at 12,000 feet in New Mexico.

In 1938 Irving Langmuir, recipient of the 1932 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, examined the claim in detail and refuted the estimate. Among his specific criticisms were:

* To maintain a velocity of 800 miles per hour, the 0.3-gram fly would have had to consume more than 150% of its body weight in food every second;
* The fly would have produced an audible sonic boom;
* The supersonic fly would have been invisible to the naked eye; and
* The impact trauma of such a fly colliding with a human body would resemble that of a gunshot wound.

Using the original report as a basis, Langmuir estimated the deer botfly's true speed at 25 miles per hour.

-

The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest creature on the planet in its hunting dive, the stoop, in which it soars to a great height, then dives steeply at speeds in excess of 300 km/h (185mph) into either wing of its prey, so as not to harm itself on impact. Although not self-propelled speeds, due to the fact that the falcon gathers the momentum and controls its dive, capture (if any) and landing in its own right, technically there is no faster animal. The fastest speed recorded is 390 km/h (242.3mph). The fledglings practice the roll and the pumping of the wings before they master the actual stoop.

This is not a peregrine: it's an aplomado and I think I can guess where you got the reference photo - was it this one? [link]

Even if you have inverted it, you might want to put which photo you referenced. If you want to sell it you have to ask the person who took the photo for permission and you have to reference it. It's a very accurate copy however and looks lovely.

You are right about the peregrine: nothing can outfly it. One female, Frightening I think she was called, was clocked at 242mph. However they haven't tried all the falcons and it's possible that the gyr, which is faster in level flight and has more power and weight, may be faster than the peregrine. Plankton and smaller things may be faster for their body size but they could not overtake a peregrine. Aplomados however are not so fast, although they look it!

nice , thanks for the link, i tried looking for the photographer but i couldn't find the original. i'll credit the photographer. i didn't reverse the image myself. I've just sent an email to the peregrine fund to see if they want me to take it off print and if there might be a chance i may work with them. thanks for bringing this to my attention

Just found an example of a good thing to do - check it out [link]

This person directly copied a photo reference from someone on DA then put the link in the photo's blurb.

Also you're not the only one to copy this photo!
[link]

The reason I'm doing all this is because I should be studying lol...but I'd rather find pictures of falcons

That's ok. In future though you ought to at least give a link to where your reference came from, for drawings like this one that are complete copies. I'm certainly not in favour of the extreme copyright of some "artists" on here that regard it as an insult and extreme theft if someone uses their work as a reference - but unfortunately they do have the right to their own work. The Peregrine Fund should hopefully not have a problem with it but they may have a problem with you selling it. What I tend to do is use several different references and sketches of my own. For example at the moment I'm drawing a spotted tree frog. I went to the museum where I work which happens to house some white's tree frogs, and I sketched one of those to get a position to use. Then at home I drew the outline, modified it to have spotted tree frog proportions and coloured it in using several references from Google. They can copyright their photos, but they can't copyright the colour of the tree frog or the way it sits naturally.

Also, Deviantart is a great place to get references - you just message the photographer and usually they're all too happy to let you use it in exchange for a link.

Actually the fastest animal on earth would be the plankton. it moves 150 times it's body mass in a fraction of a second. it would be like... being in your room then being across the street in less than a second....

Great drawing, I think you might be wrong about the fastest, I think the 'botfly' is actually faster by about 50mph, but it's like a cheetah, very short bursts.

Well...You work with what's comfortable to you. It's obvious you don't need larger paper to create extremely beautiful images. I just hope nobody ever startles you, making you jump and turn quickly while forgetting you have one of those pencils in hand......Ouch.
