Description This was done for a friendly competition with friends.
The theme was "Sci-Fi Fairytales" so this was my take on the little mermaid. :]

I thought to get rid of all the magical elements in the story.
Instead of having the Sea witch take her voice away and give her a potion that would make her human, I'd have her surgically remove the tail to be replaced with machine legs.

Drawn entirely in pencil and coloured in gimp.

**For clarification - this is *not* Disney's Ariel. I chose a green background to compliment the grey machines and to give a surgical/clinical atmosphere - and the red hair was purely to have a contrasting colour to the green, as the original blond was too dull in comparison. **

Originally I wanted to animate the lights on the machine, add music with her narrating the lyrics and have her ballet shoe ribbons and hair flutter a little. But I ran out of time, and I don't know the first thing about basic animation anyways. And I also think in hindsight, the shoes overcomplicated things a bit, and prefer the version without shoes...
Am disappointed with how this came out - but can always come back to it in the future when I have more time and the knowledge and no deadline. :']

This reminds me of a movie I watched a lot as a kid. It was called Starchaser: The Legend of Orin. It had these "mandroid" things... that looked a lot like this...

I'm not sure "nice" is the right term, but this is "nice" work.

i really really love this concept.
the anatomy is a tad off. but it looks good. ^^
In the future, animating this would be a good idea.

I'm so glad you like it!
What anatomy is off? :]
/me takes a pen and paper to improve.

Things like the arms being backwards was deliberate to make her seem something less or more than human, and they'd be used for steering in the water rather than something humans use them for - but the curve of the back and spine looks a bit off, yeah. Hope I can sort al the issues out if I re-do this! :]

THanks again for the comment

Welcomies~
Yup i agree with everything you said. But the legs are kinda long and clunky to me. but that might just be an illusion.

Okies - will take a look at realistic measurements and proportions for legs, and streamline/adjust for future arts with them in!
Thanks so much for the advice ^_^

Oh holy god, SD. This is stunning. It has a certain quality about it that reminds me a little bit of a crucifixion painting, maybe Grunewald's? Or maybe another, not quite sure... but needless to say, this piece is really something else. I adore you and I adore your art!

Never heard of that before, so quickly looked it up - and yeah, the horizontal plank of wood and the machine tower have a similarity! :]

I honestly do not know what to say, because it's an amazing piece overall SD!

The colours, the posture and just about all the little things you've added have made it completely unique!

Great work! <333

This is amazing!
The gloomy colors and look, the robotic human legs.
Wanna dance like a human now Arial?

Such a twisted, awesome look at a fairy tail. (lol)
Reminds me of McGee's games and stories.

Thanks so much SS!
Y'know, I'd love to see a McGee version of the little mermaid!
I think it'd be spectacular, seeing what he does with Alice!

It's not intended to be Ariel though - I think my mind just gave her red hair to balance out the green background. xD

Thanks SO much for the comment - and for taking the time to have a look at this doodle.

I would love to see one too. The game would be so cool to have a dark underwater fights and adventures. I've always wanted to try the Alice games, and I hear he's making a sequel that's even darker!!!

I know you weren't going for Ariel, but the thought of her seeing this came to mind. And how she always wanted to dance, this could be like a warning or something to her. Want legs? Here's the price for them! Type of thing! Just a twisted way of thinking! xD

And you are so very, very welcome for the comment! I enjoy your art and ideas you come up with and bring to life. And to me, this was no were near a doodle. XD It's just too awesome!

SuperDecimal In reply to ShugyokuSeiryu [2011-01-31 19:27:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that'd be insane!
And the thought of - like in the original story - the mermaid having her tongue literally ripped out + McGee would make some seriously twisted stuff that would be interesting to see!
Yeah, the sequel is well underway or even out now - and it looks marvellous. And Alice as a brunette looks really refreshing after having her constantly blond. She looks a lot like Avril Lavigne in the new games now I think about it xD

Hehe, oh poor Ariel! xD
Can you imagine that kind of thing in a Disney movie?

MUCH LOVE AND MANY HUGS TO YOU

She had her tongue ripped out?
Man Disney makes everything look nice and then you read or hear about the original you want to drop your jaw to the floor.
Like I read about the Hunchback of Notre Dame and in the end, Ezmerelda dies from being burned at the stake, and Quazie goes to her body and holds it while in the rain, and dies along with her. They later find his hunching skeleton with her female frame. And I mean way later.(Possibly real I read somewhere.) So sad but tragically romantic. <3

American McGee's Alice: Madness Returns. It's still upcoming and going to be on 3 different consoles and it's going to be AWESOME!
Computer, PS3, and 360. She does look like Avril Lavigne, just with more creep and insanity! ()

If they made that as a video game, and by McGee, AND on every console, I would buy it within a heartbeat. Even cooler if it was a mix between him and Disney. Like Epic Mickey but with better controls and camera. I remember watching videos of it and seeing them play the demo on tv, they really should have fixed that. I mean, you could run into a bad-guy, get your head popped off then have to wait until the game moves the camera for you.

Ahh so much typing!
So fun

MUCH LOVE AND MANY MORE HUGS BACK YO!!! XD I typed yo!

I fav'd this, dear one, because of the concept and the execution, and everything! It's macabre-Mucha-sci-fi at it's finest! XD

So neat.
:3

The only thing that distracted me were her shoes --- because, The Little Mermaid is a HCAnderson story, right? Well he's also got that story about the red shoes that make the wearer dance, if my memory is right. So that was a little distracting.

Overall, I'm really impressed with this piece.

(^_^)

SuperDecimal In reply to JinnyMcG [2011-01-25 22:44:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh lawd - thanks so much for the comment!

Yeah, all HCAnderson. :]
Oddly enough, I had her without the shoes, but thought the colour was overbalanced at the top, so added the shoes alter, but preferred it without the shoes. My BF and some friends on skype said the shoes looked better, so kept them. I'm still umming and arring about it, and not sure which version was better. ^^'

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it!
Much love to you, you fabulous lady!
