Otaku literally means 'to be obsessed'. It doesn't mean 'anime fan'. There are many kinds of Otaku out there, not just ones who are obsessed with anime. When I was in Japan, my American friends came and said to strangers that they were otaku and loved anime and they were shunned. For most people anime otaku is synonymous with living with your parents past 30, being creepy, and having a low paying job and molesting naked girl dolls. Be /very/ careful how you use this word. Please. Going to Japan and introducing yourself "watashi ha otaku desu" isn't going to get you anywhere. I might get you creepers, but not much else.
