Chapter 5: Nothing Good Can Come

I started pacing around the small space I had to move. Because my body was still around, I soon realized, I could not go far from it. Shadow waited patiently for Linden to come back, which clearly could not be good.
“Sorry I took so long,” Linden said as she came through the door. “It’s not very easy to carry a glass of water up stairs.”
“It’s ok,” Shadow said calmly. He took the glass from her hand, and drank it all in one gulp. “Now, come closer. I want to play a game with you…”
“You wouldn’t dare,” I said, eyes growing wide. “She’ll never let you, Shadow. You’ll never do it…”
I was too late, though…

That was only the beginning of the torture, unfortunately. Linden stopped talking to Shadow that day. Heck, she completely ignored him. However, this seemed to make him glad. Every time he saw her ignoring him, he got this really creepy smile on his face.
After that day, he didn’t do quite extreme things. But, the things he did do, slowly got worse and worse. For months he’d go around putting up graffiti, randomly kicking people in the groin. He got worse though. He eventually started stealing from stores, beating up people in alleyways. Then he started murdering people. Over time, he turned me into the most wanted person around. And the entire time, I couldn’t do anything about it.
I tried. Oh yes, I tried. But it never worked. I attacked him, yelled at him, but nothing every happened to him.
Worst of all, I had to watch it all. I couldn’t just stay at home and pretend it never happened. I couldn’t just stay away from him. I was connected to the body, and had to go with it wherever it went.
Sometimes I think back to that first day. The day on which I first witnessed the side of life that I hated so much. I wish that I had been able to look away from what was happening, to ignore Shadow just as he ignored me. But I couldn’t. I simply couldn’t bring myself to do it. So, instead, I watched as Shadow took the one thing from Linden that no one else ever had.
Someday he’ll pay. Someday I’ll get him back for everything he’s done. I’ve been working on what to do as he sleeps. And soon. Soon, he will pay. I swear it. I will get my life back. I will get my body back. And soon, Shadow will be no more…
