Description This is the kind of work I do to pay for my camera. It's a commercial shot of glassware handpainted by local artist Patti Overgaard. This cool martini glass is one of her bestsellers. I wanted to make it look dynamic by adding a splash of liquid to it.

Tech notes:
I took one photo in Canon RAW format and processed it three different ways. I overexposed one to get the color for the olives. I exposed one normally for the glass outline. I underexposed and shifted the color temperture to pull details out of the liquid splash. I sandwiched the three together in Photoshop and voila!

i like the colors here. the white background with the blue liquid looks lovely. and the tilt to the glass is really interesting. i guess i'm the only voice of dissent here, because i don't think it works well as a commercial shoot. the painting on the glass doesn't show up very well, it's overshadowed by the flowing liquid. maybe it's the brightness on my monitor that makes the detail not show up though.

You know ~ there's something oddly comforting about knowing that you put serious thought and work into this shot.

If you had managed to get it naturally ~ I'd have to hate you. ;o)

I really like this shot! I have an idea that is similar to this that I would like to do but am not sure how, being a beginner and all. Needless to say, I really liked reading the comments you have with the shot ... made me google "colour temperature shift"!

The photo itself is very nice. All of the edges of the glass are in focus and visible which is pretty tough to do when photographin glass (only from what I hear, not from experience, yet!) I also really enjoy the translucent look of the stream of water and the solid look of the splash! This is all very well executed!

very cool. very dynamic. YAY OLIVES!
i used to love olives. to a sick and disgusting degree (read: would sip some of the juice from the jar when there was no more olives but I couldn't accept that..)

anyhow...i was going to ask how you held the camera and the glass at the same time... but then it occured to me you could tilt the camera and leave the glass standing. my brain is on slo-mo these days

Hey Kev. Can't believe I didn't have you watched. Please forgiv this. Your work is so wonderful... I love martini glasses... Their shape is so seductive... Maybe it's just the booze... I don't know... LOL. Great work. Can't wait to see more... Dave

Not a fan of the design of the glasss, I'm more of a minimalist design fan, and the colour of the liquid is a bit disturbing.. but the overall effect, timing, and composition on this shot... flawless.

Great work, as always.

This shot has simply amazing quality, Kevin.
I think it's a little bit overexposed though. It looks a little too bright for me.
Your technique and procedures never cease to amaze me.
How exactly did you sandwich it together in photoshop? Just 3 layers on top of each other or did you delete certain parts of certain layers?
Cheers mate

There's such a strong sense of the action in this, it seems alot more powerful a splash than it should. It looks more like a bullet fyling through it.

i LOVE the diagonal lines of the tilt of the glass, the stream coming in and the way the more organic shaped splash on the right side of the glass balances all the straight diagonal lines.

the rest is clearly fantastic and i'd expect no less from you (lighting, composition, technical)

i like the technique, when you sandwich, do you use transparencies, or do you cut different sections and make new layers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

superkev In reply to geekster [2004-04-01 15:38:24 +0000 UTC]

i add a mask to each layer, and just paint out the parts that i don't want to see. this way i can paint them back in if i make a mistake. it's a very useful technique that can be used on any type of layer in photoshop.
