Description
From a recent shoot with retro jazz singer Matt Dusk. Clothing by Alexander Steel.I shot this in Matt's basement. The lighting is provided by a single softbox, and a reflector on the left to fill the shadows a bit.

I met Matt Dusk last night at one of my clients' performances(The Magic Flute) The intro was way too funny...I tapped him on the shoulder and asked him if his name was Matt, he said yes, then I said Dusk??...He replied"no, but a lot of people say I look like him..." I replied " sorry but you look exactly like him!!!" to his reply was..."yeah just kidding!!! I am!!!
If I hadn't seen the piks my brother shot of him I would not have had that conversation.

you've really brought out how gorgeous the clothes are here. the pink/red reallly pop out against the grey of the suit. the background fading from grey to white is so subtle but provides a good bit of interest. one thing i envy guys for, really cool suits.

I like how the red tie and the hankie are the main things you really focus on (well at least do.) The colors are Very Vivid. I like this shot!

I've read in many of your descriptions "one softbox used" so I have a question. Do you use the softbox as straight light or do you use it as a flash? Just wondering!

Yes, Matt Dusk is a nice guy. And a softbox is just a light modifier... it softens the light. You need to use it with a light source. I use flashes with mine

It's very good. Nice lighting, almost gives him the appearence of being a mob boss or something.
The only issue I have with it is that the lighting reveals the rather rough texture around the cheeks and eyes. It's something that I think could have been corrected with a little makeup, although I am extremely reluctant to suggest it because of the proximity of the camera to the model. At that distance, any makeup he might be wearing would be extremly evident. Still, the roughness detracts from the picture just a little bit.
Other than that, it's a good angle, good pose, and I love the suit. Very much wish that I could pull off stipes like that!
