Description I love travelling, and when I travel, I love going to the train station. Train stations are full of mystique to me. So many people, travelling to may different ultimate destinations, yet sorted so neatly into categories defined by which trains they're catching.

This is the train station (rautatieasema) in Helsinki, one of the first places I saw in the city when I went to visit ©suzi9mm . It's a very ordinary place to people who live in Helsinki, but as soon as I saw it I knew I had to come back with a camera to capture it how I saw it... as almost a place of worship to those for whom travel is a spiritual experience.

Nice pic. I'd looked at many photos of the railroad station before I travelled to Finland and already loved it. When I got there, I really tried not to just stand in awe with my mouth open like a country bumpkin. I wasn't very successful. It's an experience inside and out and my very favorite building in Helsinki (out of so much wonderful architecture there, old and new)!

The contrats between the blue and the yellow is very nice. It's a beautiful place. Maybe I wouldn't have cut the lamp above. But the contrast of shadows and lights is interessant too.

What a beautiful combination of colors, it looks almost regal! You captured its spirit with mastery!

I'm very fond of train stations myself, but, unfortunately, since trains aren't very used as traveling transportation where I live, I don't have the chance to visit many. That only happens when I travel abroad, which isn't very often.

A great photo I must say. I walk in that hall almost daily and as I checked the thumbnail and I didn't even recognize it until I read the name of the photo. Well done!

hmm. travel as a spiritual experience. ... the circular ceiling and those bright lights do kind of bring to mind a cathedral. i like how there's no one directly under the light. it's like there isn't anyone who sees being there and traveling as spiritual. it's just common to most people, so they don't "see the light" and as such miss out on the beauty it brings. bad word choice perhaps, but

train stations are cool. Completely ordinary to those who use them, passing thru in their daily lives.
But great places to sit and people-watch.

Gorgeous light and cool smooth floor. Looks very clean (compared to our main one in Adelaide)

the finns are fairly obsessive with cleanliness one day we tried to find some finnish slums. we went to the "worst" parts of helsinki, which admittedly looked nicer than than the "best" parts of my city

yeah! when i saw the name of this pic in my devwatch list i knew right away where the photo was taken. but once i saw the photo, i was suprised. happily.

i pass by this place like everyday and never ever has taking a photo there crossed my mind. i don't know whether this shows my closed mindness or the fact that you see things in a different light when travelling to new places. but i do know that this shows how granted we (or just me?) take things that we have in our everyday lives.

i have to start embracing my surroundings more.

great photo. really made me think!

cheers,
isko

i clearly need to get out more and go to more train stations. every picture i've seen of one just looks like they are gorgeous buildings with absorbing architectur
(the one in guelph is rather.. lacking on the inside. nice on the outside though )

really nicely done shot (for all that i know about such things ) - the light really gives the idea of "place of worship", there's something very holy and worshipy about it , and the people, all dark like shadows, faceless, moving in all directions, reflect nicely what you said about train stations having mystique who are these faceless beings, where are they off to? how many of them are crazy CIA spies in disguise?! (okay, maybe i'm watching to much Alias...)

and, by the by, the comment you left on my userpage made me smile I like being a hurricane wooooosh wooooosh woooOOOOOoooosh!

Quite a nice shot By looking at the meta-data, I can see that you used a slow shutterspeed and still the result is quite good..I'm wondering whether you used a Tripod to take this shot?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

superkev In reply to raza-d [2005-08-30 04:51:59 +0000 UTC]

the rule for hand-holding 35mm shots is that you must keep the denominator of the shutter speed fraction (in this case 15) higher than the focal length of the lens (in this case 12mm). the 10D has a 1.6x multiplier on the focal length, making the effective focal length 19mm, so really i should have been shooting at faster than 1/20. but if you're careful, you can bend the rules. i just braced myself against the wall and braced my elbows against my chest, and stopped breathing while i shot.

mnoo In reply to superkev [2005-08-30 08:00:00 +0000 UTC]

Just had this conversation with `justthorne the other day about how the actual focal length of the lens doesn't change, it's just the crop which is tighter as the sensor is smaller. So in theory, that rule still does very much apply here. Although you still went over a bit.

Anyways, loved this the first time I saw it and still do.

superkev In reply to mnoo [2005-08-30 13:06:29 +0000 UTC]

hehe it's true that it's just a closer crop of the imaging circle... but with the crop, you are looking at a zoomed in portion, which would magnify everything, including the effects of shaking. they might not be as noticable on a wider view.

beanarts [2005-08-30 03:49:37 +0000 UTC]

very nice vision you have May I suggest you crop the edgest and enlargen it out vertically? I just think I could benifit from a slight crop of the black to focus on the hight and grandness of the interior T'is a great photo tho even if you decide not to crop it
