Description

We met in the eruind café one of the few days when it wasn’t raining that spring. I still remember how crowded the streets were and the vehicle noises above us, but my friends and I enjoyed that afternoon like anyone else would. It was a pleasure to feel the sun in your skin and the knowledge that we could leave our coats at our university rooms after two months of never ending rain. I seemed like the weather gave the Beldukes a break so they could show off their exotic guest from beyond the Emerald Sea. Not like that stuck-up noble lady ever introduced her to us until that day even being Lady Belduke’s classmates. And much like every chat in those times, it started talking about the mysterious Catherine Lemonier.

-Have you know what Lord Atmey’s son told a sister in law of a cousin of the father of a friend who is my grandma gardener? It seems Lady Lemonier is one of the most beautiful ladies here

-I’ve heard that some people affirm that she is the most charming and beautiful woman in Heaven City. Even the eruinds get defeated by her beauty!

-You talk like eruind women are prettier than us, don’t you John? –Opal asked with a sly smile. This couple were like a comedy: their ridiculous arguments made our student days a bit more manageable.

-Oh my little cherry pie. I only talked with the respect that Zacharias’ father deserves –in that moment I stiffed, looking at him frowning. I didn’t need to be remembered my mixed race origins. My mother was an eruind, but she died in the labour, before I came out. I could say I was born from the Death, poetic, isn’t it?

-I’ve heard that she wears trousers around the university like men. Is it true? –was the only thing I said.

-Yes! She is a fashionista for sure! I wish my mother would let me wear trousers, but she would get hysterical saying I’m an indecent –lamented our lovely Aria, who had the same personality of a screwdriver. She had been raised in a very traditional family, so she didn’t study with us. We knew her for their father, owner of the chemist in our street.

-You would look pretty in whatever you wear, honey –said Julian, a medicine student and my best friend. His kindness always saved the day, and was the most mature of the group.

-As gentleman as always, right Julian? –asked John sarcastically.

-If you were more like an gentleman I’m sure Selene Belduke would invite you to one of her parties, and you don’t have to heard other people’s opinion to have an idea of Catherine Lemonier

-It doesn’t matter how gentlemen we are, she wouldn’t invite someone of a lower class –I said, sighing.

-But Lady Lemonier is not a noble, right? –asked Opal.

-You’re right. She is from a knighted family, a very wealthy one. I think she married a nobleman –answered Julian.

-Really? Her husband must be a very generous man, letting her to study here

-Her husband died two years ago –John said. –She inherited all his fortune along with her family’s

-A widow and an orphan, poor soul –said Aria.

-Well, now she can do whatever she wants, like study here –I replied, with envy. How much I wished to have her destiny and how much I regretted that wishes when I finally got to know her like she really is.

-Like working with Spargus government I guess –said Julian. I nearly dropped my drink in the new shirt with the shock, and I wasn’t the only one. The table get silent for at least ten seconds, finished with Opal’s low question:

-What do you mean, Julian?

-I’ve seen a Spargus’ ambassador entering the Belduke’s palace, and the university. I think she is studying here thanks to King Damas help

-You have to be lying. Are you saying that she is a, a…?

-An independent. She wants to free the Malachite islands of Heaven City’s government

-But Malachite islands are the principal Heaven City point of eco supplies since the mines were dried out! –exclaimed Aria.

-So an independent. This is getting interesting –I whispered to myself. –Now I truly wish to meet her

-I’m afraid that it wouldn’t happen, mister Barnham –replied a voice in my back. I turned my head to see Lady Selene Belduke in person, wearing the same smug face as always.

-What a pleasure to see the most popular lady in Heaven City or I should say the most popular lady in Heaven City’s hostess society? –I asked smiling. She gave me an icy stare, but her cheeks were red by rage. She acted like a little girl, even if she tried to look and act like a lady.

-What an immature behaviour mister Barhnam –she said. I couldn’t help but smile further. Being one of the few noble studying law in the university she often treated us like garbage, but neither I nor my friends would let her go without a witty reply.

-Oh excuse me my lady, but I couldn’t recognize you with that hat of yours; I thought you were a talking mushroom!

-Agh, save that replies for someone who actually cares about you half-caste –that was a low blow and as much as I deserved it I couldn't deny how painful it was.

-I remind you, my lady, that the one who is ruling here is an eruind –said Julian with his serene tone.

-And the Precursos will protect him, mister Martx –said Selene. –Talking about royalty. If you want to know something interesting, Prince Adrian is coming to my supper tomorrow –she boasted, like usually. But what she said was unbelievable. Adrian, Spargus prince? Julian was right after all. My interest in that lady grew up in seconds.

-And you’re telling us this because your purse contains some invitations for us; Am I wrong? –asked John, formally. Selene laughed at him.

-Oh darling, I’m afraid that I couldn’t invite you to a party where Prince Adrian would be. That would be scandalous! Well, I must go now, I have some errands to attend to –she said leaving us alone. Aria sighed, sad.

-I wish I could go to one of her parties. I can see her house lights and hear the music from my bedroom

-You know what Aria? We are going there

-Please Zack don’t lie –said Opal. –How could we enter the house? They will throw us out like garbage before we could even take a step inside

-We’ll find a way to jump there! Trust me, my friends. For now, we must find nice clothes to fit in the crowd!

We began to laugh and Julian asked for the bill. While we were talking about a way to enter there, I notice how an eruind seemed to be hearing us. His ginger hair came out of his hat and he was throwing us looks behind the newspaper as if he was trying to hide behind the newspaper.

-All right guys, let’s go to now –I said when everything was paid. Before we left, I looked to the Eruind right in the eyes before I followed my friends.

What Adrian should do?

 -Follow them

-Stay there
