Description Smartdust or Smatter is the general term used to describe military-grade, programmable matter that functions at the nano, pico and femto scales.

Smartdust is typically deployed during the beginning of a combat engagement as screens of highly versatile dust. These screens act as defensive particle shields; ablating, reflecting or deflecting enemy fire. Offensively, by generating disassembly fields and and zones of high static charge potential. Or logistically, by converting nearby matter into zones that retrofit and repair friendly vessels, or as local computational networks.

The latest version of Smartdust incorporate concepts and technologies directly from the 'Dust Shaper. Some of these include high-bandwidth, FTL communication; which enables vastly improved computation power. Follotic Link technology, which provides the ability to induce local phase transitions in the very fabric of space-time, greatly increasing offensive capabilities.

Featured here is the new 'Lor' Class Supercarrier, upgraded with the Smartdust compatible, F-Link arrays.Β

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

I want to give this five stars across the board.
It's not often I come across little gems like this one.
Here's why: This is one of very few truly futuristic works of art I have seen in a long time.
The nano/smart dust is an inspired idea, both simple and different enough to seem real to me. We may very well fight in space with clouds of smart dust one day.
Also the ships have a fitting shape, they are streamlined and somewhat organic, and they seem to be at the same level of technology as the dust. Hat off for that one!

The artist has in my opinion captured a real sense of drama and action in this shot.
I quite like the composition as well, with the angles of the ships nearly perpendicular to the weapons fire. They seem slow ans graceful, like kites or sails.
All in all this is so much better than the done to death lasers everyone else makes.

So top marks for vision, originality, technique and impact. Well done mate!

If you do not mind the curiosity, is there a specific name for the effect on the burst in the lower left corner? The effect where each spike has a slight gradient from blue to red?

The technical term maybe be "bokeh withΒ chromatic aberration"?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tinselfire In reply to supersampled [2018-06-11 15:42:55 +0000 UTC]

It could be. Seen it a lot in older anime and 1980's space art with fancy colour and lighting, like advertisements for personal computers and robot toys, and was wondering if it was a specific practice. Figured chromatic aberration was involved, but the fringing covers a wider spectrum than chromatic aberration usually does, so was not certain. And I only learned bokeh was a term a few weeks ago, so have little eye for spotting it. But, one big step closer to solving the mystery. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, and yes, I almost forgot, getting caught up in the details:
Fantastic work. Always nice seeing some unorthodox starship designs.

Well done.

This is wonderful. A combination of beautiful backgrounds, equally beautiful foreground and 'characters', a style that is pleasing to the eye and works excellently with the lore you've got there, which is equally interesting, especially as I've always been a bit of a sucker for clarktech. Kudos to you.

SUPERB.
New wallpaper for my desk top.
Also,Β there were notable differences before among the various ships manufacturers of each faction, now are you trying to give them a more unified look?

supersampled In reply to ecamaratef [2015-05-22 12:28:03 +0000 UTC]

Great question. I'm trying to converge the colours and tones of the vessels to have unifying elements so that when a giant space battle happens, it should be possible to track both sides. For Kacylis Gold and sandstone textures, for Arkaedos, Colbalt and polymer textures. Hopefully, as I produce more ships things will start to be clearer.

Eeep, you're back! Your absence was felt; there aren't many sci-fi artists who dare to venture this far into the future and come up with speculative technologies.

Nice concept Β
Just wondering if it is being launched from the ships and leaving a trail of dust (from the missile exhaust) or if it is the dust itself propelling outwards (or if the ships are being hit by the dust)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

supersampled In reply to kheng [2015-05-12 10:05:48 +0000 UTC]

It's self propelled to some extent, in this scene, the pilot as designated a zone in front of the ship to be populated by the smart dust screen. So the dust propels itself there using a combination of magnetic and gravitational fields in these columns of smoke. Turned on it's side, It would look as if dry ice where overflowing from a basin.

Hope that helps.
