I understand that the gerenuk is a rather shy creature, so you were very fortunate to be able to take such a beautiful photograph of one in the wild, and with such perfect focus.

I imagine their tiny, almost fragile looking legs, bode well for them amongst the thorny plants that they nibble on. And by standing still, their tiny features probably blend right in with the stick-type foliage, making them harder to detect by predators.

I saw on the Wikispecies site that the Deutsch vernacular name for this graceful little species is Giraffengazelle. I thought that was an appropriately lovely name.

Thank you, you're right...

Gerenuk means exactly the same in the local language, Swahili, if I'm not mistaken.

"From head to tail, the gerenuk is around 150 cm long. Males are a little taller than females, ranging from 89-105 cm, and the females are 80-100 cm. The male is also heavier than the female, weighing at 45 kg, and females are 30 kg."

The Gerenuk (Litocranius walleri), also known as the Waller's Gazelle, is a long-necked species of antelope found in dry bushy shrub and steppe in East Africa. The word Gerenuk comes from the Somali language, meaning “giraffe-necked”, and leads to another common name, the Giraffe-necked Antelope. It is the only member of the genus Litocranius.
