Description Tibet...

Another pass over 5000 metres, with fabulous view of the Himalayas...

The colourful prayer flags, representing five elements of nature, i.e., the sky, wind, fire, water and earth, are everywhere in Tibet, be it in private houses, monasteries or passes, to bless people.

Those in the picture are horizontal ones that are called "lung ta" ("wind horse") and are commonly hung on a diagonal line between two objects in high places such as the tops of temples, monasteries, stupas or mountain passes.

They bring a riot of colour and a light human touch to a bare landscape.

I liked them a lot, except maybe for the waste they created...

Something like that...I think a lot of people see Buddhists as the purest and holiest and that may be true in some cases but I'm sure in others it doesn't have to be.

Completely agree. İ remember a buddhist monk who approached and asked, in all the mytic atmosphere of Angkor Wat in Cambodia: " this looks like an expensive camera, is it more than 1000 dollars
?"

I don't usually speak to the locals when I travel - my loss - but some monks I spoke to in Thailand said it was common there for people to become monks for a year or two and then go and become stockbrokers or whatever. I saw several monks with a walkman. After that it annoyed me to see them collecting food and supplies from the local people so they can sit in their monastery doing little of use...

Ypu may be right, that may be the explanation. Yet this practice is part of the Buddhist tradition, and and it affects its image.

I like their description, "lung ta" or "wind horse."

Not only do they provide blessings to the people, but they provide beautiful colors to what would otherwise be a rather bleak countryside. I would like to see some of them being flown in the wintertime where I live, which can also be bleak when the cheerful flowers are gone.

Interesting perspective.

I must confess thet become rather a bunch of trash after some time, but in the beginning they look rather wonderful.

Thank you.
