I'm a strong believer in your long render times! If you want it to look right, set it up how it is in real life, and let the render go, however long it takes.

Physics is amazing - its like real time rendering!

may I *please* just say: This is a triumph! I'm making a note here: Huge Success!

I am a big fan of long render times... I've spent 3 days rendering a single cup. If you want it to be physically accurate... you've got to render it that way. Sure, you can fake your way to 30FPS, and the folks at Valve Software have already done an excellent job with that. This, however, is what I expect the room to actually look like when I finally make my way there and sign up for the Enrichment Center Activity Day.

and the pic =Cymae linked to? it's FULL of specular reflections, and once you get to floor level they are even more obvious.

    Cymae [2010-06-09 20:57:22 +0000 UTC]

This is too shiny...that'll be part of why your render took so long. try reducing the shinyness to make it look a bit more realisitic and lower your render times

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Supuhstar In reply to Cymae [2010-06-12 22:20:41 +0000 UTC]

I don't see why you say that. It's just as shiny in the game. .-.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cymae In reply to Supuhstar [2010-06-12 22:25:14 +0000 UTC]

It's not though. [link] There's no shiny specular highlights anywhere on the floors or walls.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Supuhstar In reply to Cymae [2010-06-12 22:33:12 +0000 UTC]

well, (A) that's a concrete room, so it'd be less shiny than this metal one, (B) It's more shiny because the Source engine only renders ONE reflection bounce, whereas this render used about 20, and (C) take a look at this room. You can clearly see shiny reflections on floor, walls, and cieling.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cymae In reply to Supuhstar [2010-06-12 22:39:30 +0000 UTC]

theres 1 reflection on the ground from the window. They don't use multiple spot speculars like you have. The human eye gets confused when there's specular coming from too many directions. You don't have to take my advice, but it IS too shiny.

OlrikV In reply to Supuhstar [2010-05-28 06:30:00 +0000 UTC]

Yea, only problem is 30 frames a second. You'll need a lot of render time.

    Dungeoneer [2010-05-08 17:01:01 +0000 UTC]

I fav'ed this because illuminating the room by just two bright spots, along with strong "tightness" of the incoming light cone, is a most remarkable concept.

I assume the long rendering time was caused by a high trace level, or am I mistaken?

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Supuhstar In reply to Dungeoneer [2010-05-10 22:39:44 +0000 UTC]

It was a combination of high resolution, several indirect illumination bounces, and bitmaps for refletivity, bump, texture, and glossiness for each object.

no, nine days. And it's an awesome PC. Has an Intel Core 2 Quad. It's just horribly complex.

    3DFXman In reply to Supuhstar [2010-05-10 22:56:44 +0000 UTC]

    It's awful.
Something like that shouldn't take more than 3-4hours.
    Nine days? WTF.
    Some animations render faster

    Supuhstar In reply to 3DFXman [2010-05-10 23:12:04 +0000 UTC]

dude, it's just the complexity. I COULD have rendered this in a couple hours, but I opted for this. Can't rush perfection, you know? And maybe I LIKE to do it slow. Maybe I'm not a speed hog for ART. You try thinking that before you say such things.

moreto In reply to Supuhstar [2010-05-11 20:59:37 +0000 UTC]

I have to agree here with 3DFXman, there is no way this should of taken 9 days to render.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Supuhstar In reply to moreto [2010-05-17 21:00:41 +0000 UTC]

yeah, okay, so it took nine days. What's so bad? Does it make the final product any worse? I could have said 9 hours and no one would say anything. Please stop talking about it.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

moreto In reply to Supuhstar [2010-05-17 21:51:17 +0000 UTC]

"whats so bad" The fact that it took nine days to render a single frame, people in my 3D class that had to render out their demo reels bugeted a entire week to render out a minute and a half of footage, it only took most of them a few days to render out all of the frames, if they had the render times you had it would of taken them about 84 years to render it out.

    Affet-kak In reply to moreto [2010-06-23 22:52:49 +0000 UTC]

woah thats a VERY tight time schedule
a week to render a minute of animation?
    thats very quick

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

    moreto In reply to Affet-kak [2010-06-23 23:25:39 +0000 UTC]

No one needed a full week, my teacher just suggested budgeting at least a week for rendering just to be safe.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

    Affet-kak In reply to moreto [2010-06-24 02:32:47 +0000 UTC]

yeah but i was saying that a week is very quick for a few minutes of animation
i would expect something like that to take more than a month!

it does depend on what the scene is and the settings i suppose. i consider anything under an hour to be quick (unless the scene is fairly basic)

    so 1h x 24fps x 120sec gives about 120 days lol
but if i was rendering something a few minutes long i suppose i would try to cut render times down somewhere. im not waiting THAT long unless absolutely worth it

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

    moreto In reply to Affet-kak [2010-06-24 03:48:20 +0000 UTC]

We actually rendered for 30FPS, I don't think anyone had any render times nearing 1 hour most were probably a half hour or less.

Yeah, but this wasn't an assignment. It's not like I don't know how to render quickly, I just chose not to. So get off my back.

moreto In reply to Supuhstar [2010-05-28 17:07:31 +0000 UTC]

If that's what you want to believe so be it. My only point in this is there is no reason to have a 9 day render and actually accept that render time without trying to reduce it.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Supuhstar In reply to moreto [2010-06-02 19:46:31 +0000 UTC]

I WILL reduce it, when I make the animation. This is for my full-quality, poster-size render.

this is ALL just a side-project. I haven't even finished the whole stage, yet. It will be months until the full animation can even be plotted out.
