Description Alistaire peered into the deep forests that encircled her crude campsite, and heard a distant ringing.
"It's probably just my imagination," she reassured herself, and laid her head back on the cold earth.
The ringing continued, only this time, a child's laugh accompanied it.
"Oh, boy," she rolled her eyes. "I should get going, in case someone comes to get me..."
In a swift motion, she swung her leg around the sleek, black motorcycle that lay parked in the dirt. She gathered her possessions in a rugged sack and set it over her shoulder. Twisting the rough handles of the vehicle, the engine roared to life, and she was off.
Alistaire smirked as the breeze ripped through her hair and the tiny twigs of the forest violently snapped under the motorcycle's weight. Skillfully maneuvering the machine, she navigated her way through the trees and into the pulsating heart of the woods. The ringing continued, but louder this time.
"I should be able to see where it's coming from now."
She gripped the jagged bark of a colossal pine tree and pushed herself up, branch by branch. Her feet scraped against the tree as she climbed up the whole 30 feet of the tree. Leaning out on the highest branch, she searched the miles of land that lay before her. The luminescent moon was full, and she stood there, admiring the serene skies and tranquil moon, when a cold presence leaned on her shoulder.
"Hello," it whispered.
Alistaire screamed, and all of her balance left her.
"My, you're very top-heavy," the child giggled.
"Y-you brat!" she panted, trying to recover from her 30-foot fall.
"Look, boy, go bother someone else. I'm not the chick to mess with."
"Boy?" the child shrieked with laughter. "Who are you calling boy?" the child grinned, leaning in.
"I'm one of you."
It was then that Alistaire took a closer look at this peculiar child. Her gray, translucent skin carried no flaws, and her eyes were the largest she had ever seen. In her sight, the two gigantic eyes blinked, one of them a brilliant gold and the other a bluish-teal. Her mid-length hair was a deep black darker than the night sky, and in it was a striped ribbon with a skull as its centerpiece.Β Β She wore a dark satin coat lined with gold and carrying long ruffled sleeves, in which only the tips of her fingers protruded from. Her checkered suspenders hung from her baggy black pants, which were messily tucked into her polished boots. Buckles decorated the shoes, and at her ankles the jet-black wings of a demon fluttered.
"O-oh." Alistaire stuttered, at loss for words. "S-sorry...I guess?"
The child giggled, and a crooked smile crossed her face.
"Roux."
"Huh?"
"That's my name, dumb-dumb. I'd rather be called "Roux" than "boy"," she teased.
"Anyways, don't shoo me off just yet. I have a favor to ask of you."
"After you scared the shit out of me and made me fall a whole 30 feet? Hah. Yeah, no thanks, 'Roux'."
Roux gave her a sly grin, and in her delicate fingers she held a tiny bell. With a flick of her wrist, the bell rang. It screamed. She readied her wrist to do it again.
"Stop, stop!" Alistaire screeched. Her hand reached out to procure the tiny bell that had created such a monstrous noise. To her surprise, she felt nothing but cold air. She tried again, but to no avail.
"What the hell?" she laughed, and tried again. "That is so awesome!"
Roux stared at the bemused teen, watching her solid hand try to frantically grab hers. Annoyed, she rang the bell again, and the same grin crossed her face as she saw Alistaire wince in irritation.
"Okay, kid, I'll follow you. You're a strange one," Alistaire smirked.
Roux grinned, and a hint of delight flashed in her features.
"Catch me if you can, slowpoke!" she cackled. With the speed of a humming bird, she disappeared into the darkness. For a moment, Alistaire only stared into the distance, and only after minutes she finally mounted her motorcycle.
The hours flew by as Alistaire traveled in the darkness, hearing her way to their unknown destination. Almost crashing several times, Alistaire was relieved to hear the faint voices of a booming crowd. In a matter of minutes, she found Roux sitting atop a wooden crate, crossing her legs and ringing her bell.
"Finally!" she sighed in exaggeration. "I was waiting forever for you. I went out to dinner while you were gone." Roux laughed quietly and vanished into a pink and yellow tent, as Alistaire apprehensively followed.
